We had two family rooms booked for the weekend. Arriving around midday after a long journey we were disappointed that the rooms weren't ready. The receptionist asked us to return after 2.30pm. We returned at 3.30 to be told again that the rooms were still not ready. The receptionist was friendly and offered complimentary drinks whilst we waited a further 45minutes. The rooms themselves were basic, but sufficient (?)for a couple of nights stay. The wardrobes were completely falling apart, and trying to find items which had fallen through the back proved that it hadn't been moved for cleaning in months. The windows didn't open and the circulating air was insufficient. The damp became apparent with wallpaper falling from walls and ceilings (a tiny amount of spilt water on the sheets failed to dry over 24hours). Our first morning we opted for the (somewhat costly) hotel breakfast; the 'full English' was mostly microwaved, and the 'continental' was a choice of stale cereal or white bread toast. The one beer which was purchased from the bar was warm and tasteless and the bottles of 'J20' were also warm with no ice available. The overall opinion therefore is sufficient for a couple of nights stay (arguably), friendly staff, nice views.

We went to York with a hen party and after reading the reviews we were understandably worried what we would find when we arrived. The outside did look a little shabby and the smells from the indian next door weren't attractive but upon entering the hotel the receptionist and all the staff were very friendly and helpful and the rooms were basic but very clean and the breakfast was excellent. Its location to York city centre is ideal as it only took 15 minutes to walk and taxis were not expensive. Overall its a reasonably priced hotel and we would use it should we go to York again.

We were staying in the Dormitory which was not ready when we arrived at 12.15pm. Cold and unviting room with heaters switched off and windows open despite the cold temperatures. No teaspoons for our tea/coffee. We found out there was a wedding reception that night despite phoning 3 times in the previous week for various information - nobody bothered to let us know there would be a disco. Kept awake til midnight with blaring music from the disco above and the floor literally shaking above our heads. Guests from the function above running up and down the stairs outside and banging on our door. Then to top it all, we were woken at 7.00am by the kitchen staff preparing for breakfast - again right above our heads and walking across the wooden dance floor! Hair in the milk at breakfast, cold bacon too. Toilet did not flush properly unless you banged the cistern. Upon checking out our comments were not received gracefully and we were basically dismissed as being picky and quote 'that is the chance you take when you book'. All in all a complete waste of money.
