“Good stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2013

We visited The Ivanhoe with a groupon deal. We needed somewhere to stay in Scarborough after a long overdue trip to see my nan who lives just outside Scarborough in Cayton. I travelled with my partner and his little boy who is 7. It was my partners son's his first trip away with us AND his first stay in a hotel/B&B. Arrived after a long journey and were greeted by a young lady who made us feel welcome and showed us to our room. Room was fairly basic and the shower wasn't great but had everything we needed for a two night stay and was a good base. Breakfast was fine, no choice of fruit or cereals though which led to a bacon sandwich each morning (although I wasn't complaining!) My partners little boy was stocked up on scrambled/fried eggs on toast which he was very pleased with! I understand peoples comments on the unfriendly barman, but he did make small talk with us on the second morning at breakfast which was nice. We didn't eat in the bar over our stay so cannot comment on their meals. We did ask if they had a cut off point for letting children in the bar area and they said as long as he was well behaved we could stay in the bar as long as we wanted, nice to have a relaxed drink after a long day and then just wonder back up to our room. Was nice to be a little out of town and we had a car so no probs getting around. Overall, wasn't the best place I've ever stayed in but it served its purpose for us and my partners son thought it was great!!

We visited Scarborough for the first time, being newbies to the area. We booked through Groupon as thought it was a good opportunity to visit somewhere that and the deal was fair value. On arrival, we found the hotel easily (it is on a main road) and it is indeed in a nice location, just next to a golf course and a beautiful 10 minute coastal path walk to Scarborough bay. I'd imagine in summer the beach would be very popular, however the town was a bitter disappointment- we witnessed a drug deal on a street corner within 5 mins! It was sadly a very run down town and I didn't feel comfortable walking round for too long.

The hotel itself was fair value for money but I was disappointed really. Our room was tiny (double bed pushed into corner) and I suppose we could have asked for another but we aren't really too pushy people. The room was basic. The shower a trickle, the breakfast was cooked food, toast. No fruit or cereal or juices offered.

We looked at the hotel menu and if you like regular pub grub (they seemed to have lots of steak dishes) it would be fine. After our hour in Scarborough we were more than happy to move on...to Whitby! About half hour to the north. This fishing town is LOVELY! We had dinner at a famous fish restaurant there and indeed returned the next day, where it was heaving with tourists! Stark and sad contrast to Scarborough.

We had paid for two nights but, through other reasons in addition to an overall ambivalence towards the accommodation, we left after one night (have never done that before!!) We wouldn't return.

Also the many caged cockatiels in the shed by the beer garden also made me sad. What was that all about?!

lovely hotel and great location. really friendly welcome by a young lady when we arrived, she was smashing. however, the waiter serving breakfast and serving as barman was so solemn he bordered on being rude. the room was lovely, clean and big, with a nice view. the breakfast was great, one of the best we have had. however, a smile or a "thankyou " from the scottish waiter would have made it a top weekend stay. there were four of us staying, two couples, and we found him quite rude and intimidating. working with the public can be hard work I know, but this guy really didnt seem to want to work there. it was a real shame

We had a very good greeting when we arrived and were shown to our room by a very friendly young lady. Everything was very clean, with plenty of tea, coffee etc. and packets of biscuits which were replaced on second day. There was a good small fridge which was handy as we like to have milk as well as wine! We went on a Groupon on March 24th which was as most people will remember a very very cold time of the year, but we were warm enough in our room. We did like the fact that we could get to our room via an outside security door that we didn't have to go through the restaurant each time. We enjoyed the breakfast which was very well cooked but would have like to have had a choice of cereals as well as hot breakfast. We ate in the town each day but when we looked into the restaurant the food looked good and there were plenty of customers in spite of the cold.
We would certainly go there again.

Room Tip: Room 6 had a balcony with views.

We went on a groupon deal for 2 nights. The B&B was just 5 mins out of Scarborough. we were met by a very friendly young lady who showed us to our room. I was very impressed by this, as some bigger hotels just leave you to find your own room!! The room was very clean, warm and a decent size (room 8), with a good view of the castle and golf course. The bed was very comfortable, and had a good nights sleep. Although we made the error of leaving the radiator on all night, woke up too hot!!
Although the pub is downstairs, you can enter your room via a side door, without going through the pub.
Yes the shower was a bit of a trickle, but it was an electric shower and from my experiences these can be rubbish. The bathroom was very clean.
We never ate in the pub, but I would recommend the Scalby arms 5 mins away for a cracking carvery for £4.
The breakfast in itself was very good, full english. But a bit disapointed by the service. I've stopped in many B&B's & had a choice of cereal and juice first. There wasn't any cereal and we had to pay 50p a glass for orange!! Also there should have been a choice with the full english. To be fair my wife asked for scrambled eggs which they cooked. The staff were very friendly and advised on places to visit. So all in all a very nice stay. Would we stop again? Probably not as let down a bit by the breakfast service.

Room Tip: We recommend for a couple room 8

We (4 adults) stayed for 2 nights on a Groupon deal. We found the mixed reviews typical for all the Groupon deals we have been on before and tend to think that a lot of the negative reviews are made by people who expect too much from these types of deals. The staff were welcoming and very helpful but not too intrusive. We were shown to our rooms and found them clean, very comfortable and very warm. The shower in our room was not a 'power shower' but it was adequate. The bed was comfortable and tea, coffee, biscuits were also provided and the TV worked well. We ate in the pub both evenings and found the menu had a good variety to choose from. It was well cooked, well served and a reasonable price. During Monday evening the pub was not very busy but this suited us - we like to play cards. Tuesday evening was a lot busier but we were not rushed to leave the table. At breakfast there were obviously many of the rooms being used as there were 16 in all for breakfast. The barman has a sense of humour and other staff were friendly and pleasant during our stay.
Breakfast was fine and cooked to order. The pub is a 40 minute walk from the town centre but it was pleasant to walk along the front. The 3a is the bus to catch back if necessary. The accommodation is nicely situated for travelling to Whitby and Filey if you have your own transport. We would definitely go back in the future. Well done Ivanhoe.

We visited on a Groupon deal, but I'm judging on the assumption I'd paid full price.

We really enjoyed ourselves. The staff were helpful during the booking process and on arrival. The room was a good size and well equipped and the food was good.

Sure, there were a couple of niggly issues, but we took those up with the staff and were satisfied with the responses.

Overall, we were very happy with The Ivanhoe and can definitely recommend it.
