“Definately NOT 4 star, needs major refurbishment”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2009

Good location, hosts very friendly, however guest house needs a refurbishment and a good clean. Room we stayed in (room 4) has "view" of rear yard / washing line! Shower room had rough repair on door, broken sink and toilet seat. This has so much potential, but sadly did not live up to the 4 star billing.

We stayed for 3 days at the hotel and have an extremely pleasurable experiance from start to finish. The hosts (John and Janet) were very accomodating and went out of their way to ensure we had the best stay. Service and friendliness was second to none. The rooms were very nice and breakfast was delicious. The children all thoroughly enjoyed the stay too and got on great with the hosts. I will certainly recommend the hotel and will definately be returning in the future.

Booked at the last minute. went with my husband and 13 and 10 year old children. The location of the hotel is second to none, the views from the terrace are stunning. The breakfast was excellent quality, we also enjoyed a gorgeous crem tea. Alot of the food is home made by Janet and was lovely. Both Janet and John were great hosts and made us and the children feel very welcome. Will definately be returning and would reccomend without hesitation.

I found this hotel on the internet and not surprisingly it has loads of great reviews. The hospitality was friendly and just so relaxed and calm. The house itself is interesting and atmospheric with the castle just behind it (bathed with the sunshine or ocasional sea mist), the lovely church of St Mary's just opposite with the grave of Anne Bronte in the yard - all within a stone's throw. Whilst we were in Scarborough we walked for miles along the north bay and the shopping area in the harbour on the other side. There' s plenty to do and see and though we stayed only three nights it's the best truly relaxing break I've had for years. I'd really recommend it.

I would not hesitate to recommend a stay at the Castle by the sea to all types of groups, and cannot speak highly enough of the hotels attributes. Nothing is too much trouble for John and Janet (owners), the rooms are comfortable and very highly maintained, the food is great and the hotel itself is an historical gem.
A special mention needs to be made of the sun terrace which can accomodate a large party, has the sun till late, and has the most spectacular views of Scarborough available. Overall, the castle by the sea deserves ten out of ten!!!!
