“Weekend Break”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2012

This was our second visit to this hotel after a period of 8 years. Wilfred Owen stayed here according to a plaque on the wall, so the building may be forgiven for its lack of modernity. Reception was very helpful and pleasant, and our room had an amazing sea view.
The room was very warm and comfortable, although it lacked a chest of drawers and not all channels on the TV were viewable. There was an extra electic heater provided should the temperature drop, but even although it was freezing outside, we did not need to use it. The ensuite bathroom was good, with plenty of hot water, although the shortage of staff was evident in the cleaning being only about 80% efficient, and the crumbling grouting in the floor tiles required attention.
The public rooms were well maintained, although again the mirrors and windows needed cleaning, again indicating a shortage of staff.
The food was good, nothing out of the ordinary, but well cooked and presented. The dining room service was excellent. Our main gripe was the lift which responded only to the first button to be pressed. This could result in a journey up and down the floors if the travellers were not going to the same level! This had its humorous side, so no offence was taken. The lift cabin seemed to be an original from its design - a real museum piece - with the sliding cage doors.
The hotel is about a 10 minute walk from the town centre, but there are plenty of attractions nearby including the lovely Peasholm Park, about 2 minutes walk from the hotel.
The hotel is good value for money as it is not as expensive as many others. We would certainly return there again.

Room Tip: Request a room on the side with a sea view.

It was our first visit to the hotel, and after arriving an hour before checkin we parked without any problems in the hotel carpark. The location of the hotel is good and would have lovely sea views if we had been in those rooms, but unfortunately we overlooked the top of the kitchen building and surrounding brick walls. I imagine this was once a splendid hotel in its day. The decor is however now very dated and corridors in desperate need of some care and attention. The hotel was very clean and warm with lots of choice for breakfast and good value for the cheap price we paid. With a lot of money and some TLC this could again be a grand hotel.

Went with some friends for a two night short stay break , . Located on the north side . Great views . Great food , all served piping hot . Rooms tired and need of re decoration but clean .

Two nights were enough but a thoroughly enjoyable shirt break

We had a very in expensive weekend in this hotel. Our first night was spent in a room that was a little bigger than a cupboard. We had to duck to avoid hitting our head on the TV. However the second night we were moved to the honeymoon suite. Although a little dated it was spacious and clean and a bargain for what we paid. The hotel staff were really friendly and we did enjoy what potentially could have been a disaster. Quote of the holiday... male receptionist asks 'is Mr Clarke joining you?' reply was 'I hope not his new girlfriend would not like it, lol'. Think this embarrasing booboo led to the upgrade :)

My husband and I were booked into the Clifton at short notice as National Holidays had cancelled our previously booked trip to LLandudno. After reading some of the reviews, we were a bit concerned, to say the least. On arrival, National Holidays had omitted to place us on the hotel's booking list - not a good start... However, the receptionist was really helpful and, after taking our paperwork away, gave us a very nice room.
We cannot fault the staff at the hotel. The food was great - although a fish dish each night would have been welcomed as neither of us eat meat - there was always a vegetarian option, but I can't stand nut roast!!!!
Re: the comments about the hotel itself. True, this hotel has had a grand past and is a litle 'tired' in places. However, to completely modernise the place would destroy its character. Squeaky floorboards, quaint, old fashioned lifts and quirky room layouts all add to The Clifton Hotel's charm!
Would I stay there again? Definitely!

There is no doubt, that previous reviews stating that the Clifton is now getting rather tired, are definitely correct.
There is a need for some tender loving care. I feel that sometime in the not too distant future, there may be a case to demolish the building and replace it with a new building.
My wife and I were allocated room number 130, it overlooks the Bay,the room itself is probably used as a family room as there was more than enough room for two people.
The staff were excellent, food very good, location superb. Come on Britannia Hotels, get your finger out and spend some money on upgrading the Hotel.

Room 238. My partner and I booked for a long weekend without doing too much research. After seeing some of the reviews we did wonder if we had made a mistake? But I'm happy to say we definitely had not! Yes it's a bit dated and needs quite a few pounds spending on it but overall we really liked the place. Our room was very bright and spacious with a lovely seaview which we were not expecting, added bonus. It had everything we needed, plus it was lovely and warm on a baltic weekend which was much appreciated. The bar was a nice place to sit and relax in on an evening and the food was spot on. Breakfast is a buffet type and no complaints whatsoever. The staff were lovely, extremely friendly and approachable and a special mention to the man who covered the night shift who chatted away and was a smashing fella! :) I'd have no hesitation going back again, just don't expect the Ritz but do expect a warm friendly stay :)
