5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2014

My wife and I spent a glorious week commencing 20 June 2014 in Scarborough and the local area and lived in Fortescue Cottage at Scalby Lodge; first class accommodation in a beautiful setting with views of the sea and Scarborough Castle and an abundance of wildlife. Thanks to Jayne and John on site for being so approachable and helpful.

We spent a great week in Harrowby cottage with our small dog. Our daughters were able to come and spend the week-end with us from Leeds for Father's Day it was wonderful. As previously stated by Lisa M. The walled garden area was great for our dog, but the garden at the other side of the cottage wasn't as enclosed and he had to be watched very carefully! Jayne the Manager of the complex was very friendly and extremely helpful.
The cottage is well appointed with comfortable beds. The complex is pleasantly quiet and well positioned for visiting coastal resorts and North York Moors.

We stayed here from 23rd May 2014 in Haydock Cottage and loved it. The cottage itself was 5 star with beautiful furnishings and bed linens. Attention to detail was very high and everything we needed was provided. The welcome basket was particularly impressive, especially the cake! We walked along the Cleveland Way every day in to Scarborough, it takes about 10 minutes and has stunning views. We also cycled along the Cinder Path. The Scalby to Ravenscar route was a bit too hilly for our children (13 & 11) but the kind chap in the visitor centre at Ravenscar suggested we drive to Robin Hood's Bay and cycle to Whitby and back which we did and it was brilliant. A stunning coastal route with a gentle incline for the first mile then fairly flat in to Whitby. There are 15 cottages in total and all seemed to be of the same extremely high standard. The onsite staff, John, Jayne and Mary could not have been more helpful. The children's play area was excellent with very good quality equipment and the paddock had been set up as a crazy golf course which was great for the children. We shall certainly be back and cannot recommend it highly enough!

Room Tip: Haydock cottage was gorgeous and spacious with views of the sea from the back garden although not fr...

Excellent location, excellent cottages, excellent service. Nothing is too much trouble for Jayne, the manager. We have just returned from a lovely break at Scalby Lodge, A select small estate of converted farm outbuildings. Perfectly placed away from the hustle and bustle, the place to totally relax. Quality accomodation with top quality furnishings. Lovely walks available, Cleveland way coast walk also accessible. Can't wait to return.

Room Tip: All furnished to the same high quality, some have sea views

We have just returned from a weeks stay in Harrowby cottage and we can't wait to go back. We chose Harrowby so we could take our dog away with us - it's good as it has a walled in garden to the back of the cottage. The front has a good lawn with a picnic table but isn't closed in for the dog. We took our own sun loungers with us which is good to do if you want to do a spot of sunbathing or sit outside and read a book (got this tip off someone who had previously mentioned on Tripadvisor that this is one small thing that is missing from the facilities). The cottage itself has everything you could need. The kitchen was absolutely gorgeous and fully equipped. Lovely bathroom with excellent power shower and large bath (only small bug bear is the fan which goes on when you put the light switch on takes a very long time to go off after you've switched the light off - for this reason we often fumbled around in the dark when going to the toilet in the night as it would keep us awake if we set the fan off - but no big deal). It was my 40th birthday when we were there and my parents had sent Scalby Lodge some 40 banners in the post so when we got there our cottage was emblazoned with them! And because Scalby Lodge were then aware of my birthday, they got me a 40th birthday card and a bottle of prosecco. Very thoughtful. Also, there were biscuits, fruit cake and a box of teabags and milk to welcome us. Nice little touches.
The views from the cottage are just amazing and we were blessed with a week of glorious blue skies and sunshine. So we thoroughly enjoyed walking out of the cottage and straight onto the Cleveland Way, along the cliff edge to the bottom of the cliffs where there was the Old Scalby Mill pub. It was a great pit stop for a drink or some food before continuing on to Peasholme Park to watch people zorbing on the lake and going down the water chute. North Bay is just around the corner where we would have a coffee at Waves Cafe overlooking the beach. We'd then walk to South Bay which is bustling with amusement arcades, fish & chip shops, pubs and shops. Or, if you prefer, you can get the 109 bus from North Bay to South Bay (5 minute bus ride, about 30 minute walk). There's 2 different companies that do the 109 route so be careful to choose the one that has written on it's window £2 fare, return is free. As the other one charges twice the price. We did visit Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay and Filey whilst we were there for the week but none of them compared to Scarborough in our opinion. They're still nice to see though.
Overall, an amazing holiday at a perfect location with plenty around to see and do.

We have just returned from a second visit to Scalby Lodge Cottages.
My husband and I originally visited in Oct 2011 and had such a lovely time, but only actually had 3 days to explore. So when we had the chance to revisit and to stay at Scalby Lodge again, we jumped at it. We were, to be honest, a bit nervous as they had built extra cottages on the site. In addition they had a proper reception area and a games room. We thought this might cause the site to be busier and nosier.
Well our fears were unfounded, the extra cottages and extra work on the site has been brilliantly carried out and the site has retained its obvious charm. The reception and games room is a good bonus and well stocked, for the rainy days.
We stayed in Fell Cottage (although to be honest any of the cottages would have been good) and had the most amazing view out to sea. This in turn led to some outstanding sunrises!
The cottage had everything you could need, just add your food and drink, plenty of room and was a lovely place to make our base. If you are lucky to have good weather there is a beautiful garden at your disposal and BBQ’s provided.
On our first stay we explored the Cleveland Way, Cinder Track and Robin Hood’s Bay. This time we visited Harrogate, York (including Betty’s tea room – The breakfast there is a must, York Minster, the National Trust Treasurer’s house and the shops!) North Yorkshire Moors Railway, you don’t have to like trains, but travelling by steam has a certain charm and the views are wonderful. National Rail Museum, again you don’t have to like trains and there is so much for children to do there, well worth a visit.
One of the most memorable sights, just as we were settling down on the sofa every evening was the Barn Owl looking for his supper! We felt really privileged to watch him in action.
Definitely recommend Scalby if you are visiting North Yorkshire.

Lovely modern lodges that are well designed for the family. And in a lovely area. The walks are amazing and would be even nicer in summer. We stayed in the barn with 5 bedrooms and was very spacious for 10 of us. Definitely going back.
