The hotel is a beautiful Victorian building and looks very imposing. There is a magnificent staircase and beautiful ceilings in the ballrooms.
Two weddings were catered for whilst we were there.
The twin bedded room that I shared was adequate and had a sea view and a lovely en suite shower room.
The hotel is well located for the shops and public transport, and for the tramway that takes you down to the beach.
The stay could have been more pleasant with more information such as the cabaret entertainment starts at 9 45 until 10 30, when music is then played for your own entertainment.
The Bingo Notice is up in foot high letters ,but, the information about the entertainment is in a very dark alcove with no times given. The only helpful member of staff is Sue who greeted each guest with a cheery good morning or evening on entering the self service restaurant.
Little information is given when one is given their key. Just "the lift is over there"! I feel the staff need more training as it is not an easy hotel to find one's way around.

i had booked via Thomas cook as the prices abroad were basically way too expensive. I had not read reviews as trusted operator then..mistakenly read the reviews..i rang the hotel on the morning we left saying I had read reviews and wanted the reassurance that my room would be clean etc. we arrived..parking yes no hope but found a long stay at the bottom of the hill £6 for 24 hrs,,not too bad. we were allocated a room which was on the next level down..revamped,,very small but we did not want to stay in the hotel room,,defeats the object of our holiday. saw lots of queues at reception.,,not a lot of staff around but its not their fault..its the managers surely. quite pricey I think for what we had,,small room but paid for breakfast and dinner..breakfast is the usual,,scrambled eggs...just edible..dinners...made on large scale,,,nothing to write home about but could do with better cooking and flavours but edible. staff lovely,,obviously working hard. my complaints would be the wedding do's are soooo loud,,drown out the rest of the hotel so glad I did not stay on the floor below. young bartenders in Java lounge don't do a lot and could learn from the more mature staff to clean tables in that area and collect dinnerware. we had left the area 2 hrs previously and dining stuff was still on tables etc so that's not great. Does need a revamp big time..busy hotel , great location, not sure if I would return..venue you can imagine was great years ago (a lot),,entertainment..they try but I actually felt sorry for them as no nice stage etc...left us unentertained so did not go back.
the royal park hotel..when entering which is the sister hotel..feels different,,looks better..such a shame but cannot comment on rooms.
otherwise it was ok..nothing special but staff we found to be lovely..

Room Tip: ask where you are,,old or new revamped rooms..bound to be odd stuff as very old hotel

I stayed for a couple of nights in a budget double room. I accepted that there would be no window when I booked; I was only there for two nights and it kept the cost down. It was strange waking up to no natural light though.

The room was nice - enough space, good bed, mirrors around. The bathroom was nice (en suite) - clean and the shower was AMAZING. Can't beat a good powerful hot shower. The problem with that was that there was no extractor fan so all the water vapour condensed in the bathroom, leaving it sopping wet for my entire stay. There were puddles on the floor, so when I went to the toilet during the night, I got back into bed with wet PJs.

I was further disappointed by the breakfast. It looked very unappetising. It also tasted very unappetising. It was very made for the masses, not quality at all. I've had better food at kids' adventure centres, which is saying something.

I wouldn't return unless I needed a cheap room for something. I would certainly not get breakfast there again.

Room Tip: Budget rooms have no windows (this is mentioned during booking) Eat breakfast elsewhere

My husband booked a room for last night as a small bank holiday break. After reading the reviews of the hotel I was sure that I would be leaving just after arriving.
The reception area is the smallest that I have seen with 2 staff manning the desk. While we were waiting to check in the people in the q behind us were discussing whether or not to ask for a refund and leave ! This did not inspire confidence.
We were given room 617 and went to look at the room. Pleasantly surprised would be the words, the room was clean & tidy as was the bathroom, the shower ran hot and the room although small was very cosy.
The only fault I found with the room was the bed. Even a flex of a big toe caused horrendous squeaking added to that the pillows were around 1" thick still we were planning to go out for the night and it was comfortable enough.
We went down for breakfast which runs from 7am till 9.30am at 8.45am not really knowing what to expect again because of the reviews. The breakfast area was clean and the food perfectly edible (the scrambled eggs were powdered though) the staff especially the man who was greeting by the door were very nice and friendly . As we were leaving the breakfast room though we found a HUGE q of people who had left it to the last minute to come down for breakfast.
All in all I am glad that we went and would encourage people to make up their own minds about the hotel. Yes it is old and a bit dated but you get what you pay for and for the price that we paid I can't really find fault with it.

just returned from 2 night stay at grand. mixed feelings about the place. staff were excellent at reception explained parking situation easily for £3 a day got parked just outside .Overall staff were really good and friendly(apart from miserable woman in java bar who seems to be there on sufferance).we were on 5th floor good sized room nice and clean(had a new carpet but think it was fitted by a waiter) . Evening meal on Friday was crap-that's being polite.so we left and ate out at a lovely restaurant called café fish really recommended. at this point we were beginning to believe the reviews so were dreading breakfast and had made contingency plans .However breakfast was excellent and the restaurant was lovely and clean, nice views over the sea . Saturday evening the meal was excellent with plenty of choices really enjoyed it. entertainment was reasonable although bingo was a rip off. All in all we had a good time and would stay again.

Room Tip: sea view rooms get sun in morning other side get sun in afternoon

Arrived sat 23rd August for the bank holiday weekend. What a disappointment. Room filthy. Dust everywhere. Wallpaper falling off. Very tired and dated. Had to queue for an hour or more to check in. Had to queue another hour to complain to be moved. Room not a lot better. Everyone was complaining the same, wanting their money back or a different room. No staff around. The ones who were there run of their feet. Everyone bad tempered and stressed. Dogs everywhere. Should have been kept to a certain part of hotel but no, everywhere. Hotel smells. Paid £70 for a room with no view looking out onto a wall. Will never go again. Shabby dirty and a terrible disappointment. Some rooms don't even have a window. Absolutely dreadful
