“Just...awful.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2013

Me and my friend stayed for one night at The Grand Hotel, and I am so glad it was just the one! Checking in was easy and quick enough, but the receptionist failed to inform us that our room was in the basement, so we were walking around for a while before another guest had to help us find our room. Where our room was placed seemed to be so out the way, it felt like if anything happened that no one would even know we were there!
We booked a double club room for £24, but I honestly wouldn't pay that knowing what I know now. There was no window in our room, obviously, and the radiator was on full blast with a fan placed on top of the television also on full blast. The radiator got switched off straight away because the room was stuffy enough. The bathroom also smelt like someone had just used it. We figured out that it must have been coming through the extractor fan. Sure enough we got 3 towels, but the glasses on the sink had lipstick marks on them. There was also a huge spider in the bathroom, and as someone who hates spiders, I was repulsed.
The television was also so low on the ground that you couldn't see it from the bed, and all five channels were fuzzy. The room, in short, was depressing. After going back to our room after a night out, guests near to our room were screaming at each other, and started knocking on our door at 4am! Surely security should have heard all this commotion? Speaking of security, we forgot our key card and had to plead with them to let us back into the hotel, even though we had our actually key and receipt with us. 2 hours sleep in total, we got because of that. Doors slamming all night from other rooms, too. We never managed to get breakfast because of the sheer amount of people there, but after reading some other reviews I think that's a good thing. I have to agree with others also about the small lifts and sort of musky smell. Not good.

Seriously, anyone looking at booking this hotel I would certainly think again. The hotel room was appalling!! The first room we got put into 2016 (the dungeon) as the staff refer to it as, someone had used the toilet! And there were pubic hairs on the bed. We complained and got moved next door, which was just as bad. We asked to speak to a manager and got completely ignored!! I could not believe how rude and ignorant the receptionist was! And the manager knew we were having problems and literally just hid from us in a ro behind reception and wouldn't come out to speak to us. We have another night to stay and we are dreading it!! The room we were eventually moved to was a slight improvement, but you could hear every single toilet flushing in the corridor as well as every shower. It's completely ruined out little break away. Would not advise this hotel to an animal!!! STAY AWAY!!!!

We paid 25 pound for a club room as we got it uograded because it was my birthday. The entrance was the shambles. There were people queing all over the place. I think they could make check in so much nicer if they used the space. The lifts take AGES. And are tiny! We got to our room. Was big, had 2 doubles in. After further inspection we found newspaper from December 2012 lodged in the windows to keep the draft out and mould along the window ledge. I know it was 25 quid a night but it wasnt very welcoming. The bathroom however was fab. Big bath with the water jets made it better. We went down for breakfast in the morning to find a queue 2 miles long so we walked around scarborough to look for somewhere to eat breakfast. The hotel needs so much work to make it Grand. But you cant call it Grand the way it is now.

The service at the desk was awful not at all bothered with our disappointment of the first room we arrived at wall paper falling off! Mould on wall! Shower room awful! we went back to reception and was allocated a different room which was equally as bad outside the window was old bean tins and fag ends!! Stained carpets and wallpaper!! We then returned to reception and got a full refund and this was only our experience of 30 mins in the hotel!! Avoid this hotel at all costs!! There waa

We stayed in this amazing hotel as part of a package with a coach tour of North Yorkshire.

Sad to say that the outside grandeur is not generally reflected inside.

Our room was on the 6th floor which requires the use of two separate lifts; first to the 5th floor then a short walk to the other which only serves floor 6. Our room was quite small and somewhat shabby with bare wood on the window frames and filthy windows. It is unwise to leave the push-out windows wide open as seagulls come right up to the glass and look in.

The food served in the restaurant was average at best, guests serve themselves from buffet-style serveries. At times there was a lack of certain dishes and the menu was somewhat uninspiring. The layout of the restaurant was reminiscent of a holiday camp and the view out spoiled by misted double glazed windows.

Our party was given timed slots for dining and the staff were totally inflexible on these times and you will be refused entry if you do not have your room card with you.

On the plus side the grand staircase is a sight to behold and the ballroom is stunning.

We accept that this hotel is accommodating coach parties of (mainly) elderly people and that is reflected in the overall cost. However, if the hotel was renovated to a higher standard then it would attract more guests travelling independently

Room Tip: Rooms on the 6th floor (seaward side) have a view over the harbour. Some interior rooms have no view...

I was unsure whether to give this a 3 or 4 stars. I chose 4 because when it came down to rating the service, location etc, it averaged 4 stars.

ROOMS:
I believe we got the best experience from The Grand as we stayed in one of the four turret rooms. We originally had a budget deal and was stuck downstairs in the basement with NO WINDOWS. Although it didn't bother me, my Dad, who has to have the window open at night, it did bother. We went back to reception and after a short wait (one receptionist on the desk at 2pm) she sorted it straight away. She gave us the option of moving to a turret room and after looking we decided that the small extra charge was worth it. The room consisted of a double room, twin and a shared bathroom. The double room was half the size of the twin. The room was very clean, just could do with an update. We had stunning views of the Scarborough coast. 8 little round windows, surrounded the rooms so you technically had a 360 view. Room service every day with fresh towels, tea and coffee.

BREAKFAST:
Earlier you get there, the better. Mid week there are a lot of coach trips (=lots of old people). First day we did Breakfast at 9am. No where to sit and the places you could sit were not set up. Next day we went down at 8am and felt the benefit. More food, it was cleaner and more spaces to sit. Breakfast was average. Full English consisted of: fried egg, bacon, sausage, beans, scrambled egg, tomatoes and fried bread. Cereal was corn flakes, shredded wheat, coco pops and bran flakes. Yoghurts and Jams. Toast machine. Coffee, Tea and Fruit Juices. Typical of your mass produced breakfasts. Nothing at all fancy but does the job. One day I took some brown bread from by the toast machine and got some bacon for a bacon sandwich - delicious.

FACILITIES:
The Grand does not have Swimming Pool but there sister hotel (The Royal) does. You can use there swimming pool for £2.50 (adults) a day or £5.00 for the duration of your stay. You can tell the pool was once a little haven but it is a bit run down now. It is like being in a little grotto. Small heated pool, sauna, steam room and spa pool. HOWEVER, when we went the spa pool and steam room were BOTH not working. We did go in. Very warm pool and private. My mom and I were in the pool with another couple. I would have not liked anymore people to be in there as it was a funny shape so you cannot do lengths or anything like that. I would say 5 people could fit in the Sauna.
The Grand's evening entertainment is very typical of a large hotel on the seafront. Bingo, sometimes Quiz and Cabaret. The Cabaret acts were a mix match. The dancers were AMAZING! and great eye candy for the men. They had so much energy, enthusiasm, chemistry and were in sync all the time.
Little games room with two pool tables, a few arcade games and chairs in. One of the pool tables was broken.

LOCATION:
Fantastic location. Right on the seafront. For the weaker knee'ed, the tram is adjacent to the hotel, in order to get up and down to the seafront. The main shopping area is a stones throw away and there are restaurants outside the door.
Train station is about a ten minute walk.

MISCELLANEOUS:
The lifts are awful. You could be waiting all day for them. We were on level 7, so a lift was needed (I did walk the once and it knackered me out). There is only two lifts for levels 1 - 7 and they can fit about 5 people in. Not 8 as it states on them.
Parking is £3 a day from hotel reception. Not bad but when you consider most hotels come with free parking you do feel a bit ripped off. My tip: Go out for the day just before 9 (Goathland, Whitby, Pickering) and come back just after 6, park up and they wont charge you!

Overall, we enjoyed our time at the Britannia Grand Hotel. I doubt I will go again but it was certainly a good experience. Just the job for what we wanted, a short break away at a seaside location.
