For reasons I won't bore you with, for the 4/5 years, I have ended up in Scarborough for a couple of days. Each time, I fully intend to steer clear of fish and chips, as much as I enjoy it occasionally, because they are everywhere, and I mean everywhere. Yet for the last few years, I have succumbed to the smell and gone to have fish and chips, each time to be disappointed by what I was presented with to fill my face, either over-priced, or in a pokey little café, or greasy fish, or worst of all, leaving the skin on in the batter so it goes as soggy as an old sock in a pond. Do NOT leave the skin on chippy owners!
Alas, this time was no different. We arrived in town and found a parking space on the little pier right next to the Harbour View Café. When my wife pointed out this place was in the top 10 places to eat in Scarborough, I thought she must have been mistaken, and berated her accordingly, as any loving husband would. However, as is normally the case, she was right, and so it was that I was going to have fish and chips again, as I was hungry, and we were there.
Not much to write home about on first impressions, but it was clean, very clean for a "chippy", and we were welcomed with our little one, who was obliged wonderfully by one of the staff when she couldn't make up her mind what she wanted to drink; a nice touch as they were so busy.
Food time. John Torode would have been impressed with that batter had he had his vegetables tempura-ed in it. Light, thin and crispy, it was lovely, nice piece of fish, no skin, rustic chips, slice of lemon, lovely, and views of the harbour out of the windows, marvellous.
If you visit Scarborough and want fish and chips at the seaside, you don't expect fine dining, you expect good quality fish and chips, and here, that is exactly what you get. £12 for two people? What more could you want? They were queuing to get in when we left, what does that tell you?
I'm hungry thinking about it!
