“history on canvas”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2013

Scarborough art gallery houses a wonderful collection of paintings linking the town to the sea and its history as the first holiday destination and resort. There are also two paintings by Frances Nicholson the father of water colour painting. On the first floor an ever changing exhibition makes regular visits a must.

“The current exhibition at the Scarborough art gallery is fabulous!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2013

The current exhibition at the Scarborough art gallery is fabulous! It's called "Halfway to Paradise" and comprises 100 photographs of rock stars from the sixties. You will find all your favourites here, and many you had forgotten. Cliff Richard, Joe Brown, Marty Wilde, Billy Fury, Chubby Checker, The Beatles and many many more.
While you are admiring the pictures, there is sixties music playing, which adds enormously to the atmosphere.
Highly recommended.
One note of caution, the exhibition is upstairs, and there is no disabled access.

“Great local gallery”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2013

With an ever changing collection of visiting artworks upstairs and a great permanent collection downstairs this is a great little gallery to a while away a few hours. Downstairs there are some great works with a strong showing by local artists. there are some great Atkinson Grimshaws which are well worth catching. The gallery is an old house and is quite warm and cosy especially in the winter, in the summer it makes a cool retreat. It is a pity that there is no good cafe...
They do lots of kids stuff in the holidays...
check it out!

“Give me excess of it”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2012

A couple of minutes walk from our hotel, just across a public garden, lay the entrance to the unassuming building that was Scarborough Art Gallery. In we went and without asking, were given the economical options to afford us access to it and the Rotunda Museum of Geology. The picture in the entrance gave us a glimpse of what was to come. If there was nothing but the collection of Grimshaw paintings alone, yet it would be an investment worth the money. The scenes, the effects, the shear brilliance of the pieces are frankly worth a better gallery. Do not miss this opportunity to see some truly wonderful contributions from local artists in an intimate setting. However long you choose to spend there will not be time wasted.

“An oasis of calm with very welcoming staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2012

If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of Scarborough town centre then this is a gem of a visit. The Crescent is a delightful quiet circular street with a park in the centre and many historical connections. The young lady on reception could not have been more pleasant and welcoming. There is a small cafe where you help yourself and then pay £1 for drinks including hot drinks and a small shop. There are some wonderful paintings with Scarborough connections such as those by Grimshaw. It is not a large gallery but what exhibits there are are of good quality.
