Clearly everyone has different expectations - and I don't doubt that what niggles some doesn't bother others...but all I can say is that we were not at all dissapointed by our week-long stay; just finished. Yes, there was scaffolding (now on the rear only) but the website made it clear what to expect, and in any event we had asked for sea-view which was not compromised in any way. OK, one of the stairwells was partly shut due to on-going repairs as mentioned...and we came down one morning to find one of the lobby corridors shut-off due to a ceiling plaster fall during the night...likely caused by some guest not keeping an eye on their bath? In any event that was very swiftly remedied by immediate attention by builders and the disruption quite acceptable given the circumstances. To off-set the building work a little the Hotel had made certain token concessions such a making WiFi access free (code simply having to be obtained from Reception).

All in all, we had a very comfortable and relaxed stay - everthing worked well and the Spa /Pool suite was wonderful - victorian themed and never crowded. Restaurant staff were cheerful. local, and attentive. We're not a 'foodie' family by any means but considered the food to be well cooked and tasty. Granted, the menu does not vary from day to day, excepting the roast of the day - and initially I feared that this would mean I'd run out of my preferences before the weeks end. However, it was explained on day-one that the, in itself varied, set-menu could be departed from, via a £30 allowance per person towards the a la carte menu; hence giving more choice (although it has to be said that some dishes were repeated on both menus). In practical terms it would be quite difficult to choose course-combinations options that exceed the 'credit' of £30pp , excepting some larger steaks, so with a little thought the range is extended...although I accept that many, like me, would prefer not to have to mentally juggle the numbers to avoid potential extra payments. In any event, we managed to have, effectively, 21 evening meals between us with very little repetition per person. The sweets especially were very pleasant....and the buffet-style breakfast was more than adequate, with plenty to choose from....with the staff always offering to have ad-hoc items sent from the kitchen if need be.

The room was large enough and comfortable. Our daughter was accommodated, as expected, in our room on the sofa-bed. There was the option of a complimentary turn-down service in the evening; which would have meant that the sofa-bed was restored to settee-mode during the day - but we decided not to bother with that, and instead to have it left down all the time and just 'made' as normal during room-service. The bathroom was a delight - the pink mood-lighting option being very effective... and the waterfall taps and powefull overhead spray shower making an amusing change. No problems at all with water - temp...always hot available, if needed.

Parking was effectively free - 4 day passes for local street-parking being given on arrival and then on demand. We were well aware from the website and from TripAdvisor comment that this hotel and others close-by suffer from a lack of dedicated parking and with this expectation in mind we were not unduly fazed by that....the roads close-by seem at first glance to be permanently lined with cars, but there are a lot of roads to choose from within the permit and on balance we were never more than a minute or so's walk away from tjhe hotel. The esplanade location of the Hotel is great - lovely views, handy for the South Bay gardens and Spa centre. Although there are a lot of cars parked outside, through traffiic is light - and hence it is quiet...we had a sea-view overlooking the esplanade and were able to sleep well with the windows wide-open...night time noise (both motor and 'human' ) thankfully not being a problem at all in this spot...and I'm always very sensitive about that sort of thing....Maybe we were just lucky; I suspect not, though as the site is remote from the 'busier' parts of town.

In summary - no hotel is perfect - but for us this was one to savour; and we shall return one day!

We paid for a superior room and weren't disappointed - the extra money was worth it for the sea view alone. All the room amenities were as you'd expect for a 4 star hotel, with daily room service. The bathroom was particularly nice - very modern, large bath with overhead shower. The TV service was good, all freeview channels & sports.
We ate in the bar a couple of times and had room service and the food was nice, staff pleasant & generally a nice atmosphere. Prices quite reasonable. We never ate in the restaurant so can't comment on that.
We both had treatments in the spa, which was very relaxing. We found the staff to be very helpful. We didn't use the gym/pool/sauna facilities.
The check in/check out process was easy. Guests are given a parking badge for street parking but you are lucky if you can get a space outside the hotel, however the zone in which you're permitted to park is large so we never struggled to get a space - the worst was a 3-4 minute walk from the hotel, but there is a loading bay outside so never a problem to pull in there to load/unload cases.
The surrounding area was nice, but there aren't any shops, restaurants etc on the doorstep. The walk down to the sea front is a steep one, however you can always use the cliff lifts for a small charge.
Overall we were very pleased with the hotel and would definitely stay again or recommend.

Booked spare of the moment for one night for my partners birthday. Booking was easy and the lady on reception was helpful. I opted for dinner bed and breakfast, thought it would be easier than finding a restaurant since we were only there one night. I also had the romance package added. On arrival the staff weren't very friendly which was not expected at 'the only 4 star in Scarborough' . We were actually made to feel like an inconvience, i had to chase up the romance package which was awkward as it was a surprise for my partner. But thankfully all was ready in the room, some small details had been missed which was what i had paid extra for. I didn't know about the scaffolding and wasn't told on the telephone about it. We did have a sea view and the scaffold was in the way, saying that sitting at our table eating breakfast the next morning looking out was bliss, especially because the weather was superb too. Dinner at the hotel was ok, a little confusing what was included in the price. I presumed we would have a set dinner and pay for wine/drinks etc but we were allowed £25 per person?? It is fantastically situated for Scarborough and only wished we had enough time to do a walk along the coast. Checking out was as friendly as checking in - not very. i was going to mention some of the niggles but wasn't even asked if we had a nice stay so payed up and went!! Not sure if i'll go back, resort is lovely, view from room lovely but an expensive disappointment.

May i first of all apologise for the inconveniences that were created due to your romance package not being ready on arrival i was pleased to hear that the situation was remedied immediately.

Over the past six months we have had major renovations at the hotel and the scaffolding has been necessary, we have at all times shown images on our web site and informed customers of the situation. The project has unfortunately over run by a few weeks and in turn there have been instances were customers have not been informed verbally. If this was the case I do offer my apologies.

Many reports posted on trip advisor do comment on the friendliness of the staff and the warm greeting received, we also have a schedule of training that makes it compulsory for staff to attend a customer service course.

I do thank you for your comments and hope that you do take the opportunity to visit the Crown in the future.

I was lucky enough to stay two nights at the Crown Spa whilst house hunting with a close friend. The hotel is in a great location - just a little way from the town. Close enough for a walk, far enough to not be disturbed by rowdy revellers!! It would be very handsome but was still covered with scaffolding when I stayed. The room was huge, as was the bed. The bedding was lush - a real touch of luxury. I loved the marble bathroom but as another reviewer has mentioned, the floor can get a little slippery around the walk in shower. A double hazard for me as I had taken the room because of a disability!

The staff are warm and attentive without being obsequious. The food is a little disappointing and does let down what would be a fabulous hotel. The evening meal was just bland and the breakfast was worthy of a canteen. I'd recommend the salmon salad from the bar meal - yummy and much cheaper!

My tip is to make the most of the pool and 'relaxation suite'. I didn't use it until the morning of my departure - big mistake. Especially as the spa pool was out of action.

To sum up; not quite worth the rather hefty room rates but a warm, welcoming and comfortable hotel all the same.

First visit to the Crown Spa, stayed in a feature room. The room did not disappoint, it was large, bathroom was definitley a feature and the were many extra's included. Quality of customer service by all staff was top rate. The one disappontment was the scaffholding still in place to repair the roof blown off in January. To paraphrase Basil Fawlty, the room did have a sea view, it was there between the land and the scaffholding. Lack of a good sea view (and the inability to use the balcony) made the room somewhat overpriced. The information on the hotel website relating to the scaffholding is misleading, particulalrly if you dont know the hotel and the call made to the hotel prior to booking to check also dismissed the issue as not relevant for teh room we had booked. Would certainly visit again but only once all repairs have been totally completed.

We had a room with a walk in shower - this was a huge mistake as it flooded most of the bathroom - this took forever to dry making trips into the bathroom very dangerous on a slippy wet surface - the waste pipe could not cope with the volume of water. We asked about an alternative room - but only available at large additional supplement.

Buffet style english breakfast did not impress, bacon was cold and sausages and eggs overcooked - cooked fresh and waiter served hot would have been far better. Waiter service was available but only if you ordered Kippers etc. We stayed on a DB&B basis but it is the first 4 star hotel we have stayed at that offered almost the same menu each night and at £30 for each evening meal we felt that to simply offer a different roast was not enough of a change when you stay for more than one night.

We were also very annoyed to find that after we returned from a swim in the pool our window was wide open after carefully locking it. The management reply to an earlier review said they had fitted 5 cctv cameras but with 90 rooms over three floors would this really have safeguarded 2 sets of car keys, wifes handbag, wallet, credit cards, satnav and cash? There was a safe in the room but only available at another supplement - not sure why they have safes in the room if the cctv works so well? The new cctv cameras also failed to deter someone from breaking into cars parked right outside the hotel!
