4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2013

Just returned from a 2 night stay at the Royal and must admit before we arrived we had reservations after reading some reviews on here. However we left wondering if some people stayed at the same hotel. We arrived 45 minutes early but room was ready and check in was very smooth. We had a room on the 3 rd floor with a sea view on the right and a lovely view of the castle over the building opposite. Room was well equipped with tea/coffee making facilities, iron & board, 40" LCD TV. bed very comfortable and everything seemed very clean. Large tiled bathroom with a very good powerful shower(Mira) with plenty of hot water. Wardrobe with loads of hangers, dressing table, coffee table and comfy chair. Only stayed B&B so did not sample the evening meal but the breakfast was nice with plenty of choice, fruit juice, cereals, usual fry up, all buffet style. You were shown to your table by a member of staff who also took our order for tea/coffee. You could have as much as you wanted so good to start the day. Decor of the hotel is a little dated in parts, very grand in reception area, but you can see where the redecoration has started. Bar service of an evening was very good and there was a cabaret act on the night but that only lasted around 30 minutes. That may have been because of the lack of an audience really, apart from us there were 6 others. Bar prices weren't too bad really for a hotel. They have piped music and I must admit I was a little fed up of hearing Frank Sinatra morning. noon and night, but that's down to personal taste I suppose. Good location, just around the corner from shops and a pleasant walk to the promenade. Not much happening in town this time of year but that was expected. Definitely recommend a cafe around the corner from the hotel in Bar Street for lunch. It's called Boddys and the food was really good, home made quiches sandwhiches, and cakes to die for and put on those extra ounces. We had the biggest cream scone we have ever seen, truly delicious. So all in all a very pleasant couple of days and we would definitely stay at the Royal in future. Must comment on the parking which is not good. Scarborough Council appear to have made things as difficult as possible for visitors, one way systems seemingly everywhere. The hotel do offer a discount in designated areas but they were all either full or difficult to find, though that may have been due to our poor sense of direction. As we did not plan to use the car whilst there we parked on the Esplanade which is free, though it is a good 20 minutes walk to hotel. Keeps you fit though.

Stayed here for 3 nts. Hotel dated but centrally located, clean. Great value for money. Had this as a base to visit Whitby and surrounding area. Food good standard.
Parking can be a problem, you will need to walk to hotel a couple of hundred yards from local car parks.

Stayed here for 3 nights. Room was tiny. It was advertised as a standard double but it was bog standard. It was obviously a single, as the head board was too small for the bed and the bed was a queen size because the two pillows either side of each were too wide and kept falling off. Part of the room had been taken over by an ensuite bathroom and as the bed was right up against the wall, if we pulled it out to both be able to get into bed, we couldn't shut the bathroom door.
Staff were unhelpful and unsympathetic.
Only good thing is the central location meant there was loads to do so we didn't have to spend a lot of time actually in the hotel. A truly awful experience.

Room Tip: Superior does not mean luxury at this hotel. It means the average expectations experienced in other...

If considering this hotel - dont!
I stayed with a friend in September and the whole episode was a pantomime
1. On arrival my room had been allocated to someone else- this however was resolved but not to a room as booked
2. No remote for the tv- I reported this and staff promised to provide one but for the whole of my stay there was no remote , its not that we are too lazy to turn channels manually but to find stations was near on impossible.
3. No lock on the bathroom door- not even a catch to hold it closed- just bare wood with a hole- see pictures
4. Lampshades that were totally squashed and damaged. See photos
5. Evening meal on the Friday abysmal. There is a supplement to pay for scampi and to be honest the plate put in front of me was not even worth the supplement.
6. Young man on reception on the morning of the 21st September very arrogant and rude.
I am not a particularly picky person and do not want to have to complain but the standards at this hotel, the promises by staff to put things right and not doing so,
The dining staff however were fantastic, the only saving grace for the hotel. However I asked for the wine waiter and after having eaten my starter and main course he still had not appeared.
Please only stay here if you have a good sense of humour or else you will end up crying.
PS the lift is fun- it tells you its going down/Up before it then tells you its "doors opening" so be quick ha ha.

Room Tip: Try a different hotel

Feel i have to write this review as I was very wary of my stay due to all the bad reviews posted on here.
We had a lovely weekend stayy here. The room was clean and well kempt. The evening meal was delicious and the staff were courteous and helpful at all times. The buffet style breakfast was just that, but all the ingredients were well cooked and dislayed and I quite enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere. The staff were on hand if you required any assistance.
The NCP car park recommended by the Hotel is nearby and extremely good value for money (especially by NCP prices) - the Hotel even gives you a card to obtain a discount when paying to leave the car park.
The Hotel itself has a lovely feel of dated granduer which I both liked an appreciated.
All in all a thoroughly enjoyable stay - though i have to say I may balk at paying the full price for our weekend which we got at a special offer through a discount website.

Arrived at this hotel at lunch time the receptionist was helpful and told us we could not check in until three o clock then preceded to try and advise us to park in a NCP car park which we know from experience are usually very expensive. We returned later and checked in to get ready for the evening meal, on trying to have a shower before going down to the restaurant found the water was cold but put it down to high usage and made do with a wash which we haven't done for years. The food in the restaurant was mediocre and geared up to accommodate the older generation which would be acceptable if it had been hot. The next morning we again attempted to have a shower, water still cold which we reported on leaving the hotel in the morning, we where told it would we sorted by the time we returned. On return in the evening we again attempted to use the shower, still freezing, husband went to reception to report yet again that we had no hot water in the shower was told that the maintenance man would sort it, one hour later nobody had turned up so rang reception two hours later nothing, so rang down yet again to be told the maintenance men had gone home, we ended up asking if we could use the spa showers, this was acceptable but has got to be one of the worst experiences I have ever had, the showers were filthy and had obviously never been cleaned for years there was plaster missing from the walls and a serious damp problem I. Can honestly say I would never stay at this hotel again.

Room Tip: Don't go there choose another hotel
