“Grubby and unpleasant.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2014

I stayed at this place over the Easter weekend. Despite pointing out that the windows had bird muck all over them they were not cleaned. I found the reception staff unhelpful and quite defensive. As you enter the building it is quite grim and in need pf an update including the rooms. The only star rating I would giive this would be 1.

My friends and I went for 1 night in April, looks a bit run down from the outside, and like a lot of the buildings in the area it is very old, and big. Inside was not too bad, old fashioned, but quite quaint. We received a friendly welcome on arrival, and for an extra charge of £8.50 we received a parking spot outside the building. I would recommend arriving early if you want to take your car, spaces get filled quickly. Our apartment slept 4, with a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and large living room/bedroom. We took our own towels as there is an additional £2.50 charge per towel if you want one provided. We also had no washing brush, or soap in the bathroom. We were told to be careful with the heating, as the electricity runs from a meter, which you get a prepaid card for. Despite our initial raised eyebrows it turned out fine as we did not need the heating on at all as the apartment was really warm. Location was the best thing about it really, setback from the cliff edge, overlooking the sea and within walking distance of seafront - it pleased us!

Just got back from 4 nights here. I liked the apartment, nice size rooms and the extra charge for sea view is well worth it Great views. Ideal location just 5 minutes walk to centre of Scarborough. Apartments are not luxurious but simply furnished with all you need. Couple of minutes walk to food shops etc and right by the cliff railway down the beach and spa. We did have a problem with cookers though. On the first night we found the oven did not work but the manager quickly gave us the key to next door apt to use that cooker and he arranged repairman to come next day. He did but only to say parts will take 7 to 10 days so manager moved us to another apt upstairs. Here the cooker did work but the rings on the hob could not be switched off and was therefore dangerous and we resorted to buying ready meals from Sainsburys just round the corner and heating them in the microwave. Don't let our experience put you off. The apts are well worth staying ther but when you book get a promise that the cooker is in full working order. (I think most are now being replaced (April 2014

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a sea view

Recently stayed at Villa Esplanade apartments for a 3 day break with my partner and 14 week old daughter and could not fault it one bit. We had a family room with large bedroom, living room complete with TV and freeview box, bathroom with bath and shower and completely fitted kitchen with everything you need for a self catering break. The place was spotlessly clean and the staff were very pleasant and helpfull. We bought 2 £5 electric cards for our stay but ended up getting a refund on one of these as the cost of electric was very reasonable. The rooms had fan heaters which quickly heated the rooms if required. The location on the esplanade is great with stunning views. We ate next door at the 4 star crown spa very nice and also had drinks and a curry one night in the Highlander hotel which is also next door. We never got to try the Mexican restaurant below the apartments but it was very busy every night even on midweek nights. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely be returning around same time next year.

After reading some of the reviews on here, we approached our holiday at villa esplanade with some intrepidation, however what a pleasant surprise we got when we entered our apartment, (no 15). The apartment was much bigger than we expected and much more better equiped than we could have imagined. The apartment was cold but heaters were provided which we ended up switching off as we got too warm, (And we had a three month old baby!). We bought a card for the electricity at five pounds, and this lasted us for three nights, during which we had lots of extras on such as a baby feed making machine and steriliser. The apartments are nicely situated and paying for a parking space worked for us as we knew we could park close to the builiding no matter what time we returned.

A strange place, a warren of apartments up and down stairs, crossing over the toilets for a tex mex restaurant. Eccentric reception. You pay for your electricity on a meter - like it is 1950. Careworn rooms in need of a refit, higgldy piggldy kitchen, bring your own towels and soap. But: our apartment was large and comfortable with nice views, warm (too warm given that the windows appeared to be nailed shut), and above all - cheap. Don't come here with any illusions, it is cheap and cheerful. But, we 4 gay guys had a fun time out of season in Scarborough for not much money which makes up for a lot.

Room Tip: Room 5 was ok.
