“Lovely place and owners!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012 via mobile

Stayed here on a deal and we were made to feel very welcome and at home from the minute we walked through the door!
Breakfast - very nice
Room - spotless including the shower room
Owners - very welcoming and nothing was too much trouble
Location - close to everything and no need for a car
All in all a lovely stay made better by the clean accommodation and welcome from the hosts! :-)

Stayed in Room 16 (the very top of the building) on 27.10.12 for one night. We arrived to a friendly welcome, although were also met with a very strange musty smell as we walked in (we're still not sure what that was, was overpowered by breakfast smells in the morning, but lingered at all other times). As other reviews have mentioned, we were fine to walk up all the stairs, but worth a mention if you're not. The room was freezing when we entered, and the storage heater did not do much to help to be honest. The decor of the room (and to be fair, the entire hotel) is in need of updating, but it was clean and so I can't fault it really. As a couple in our early 20s, we weren't really expecting such old fashioned furniture and bed linen, but it did the job I suppose. Breakfast was surprisingly good- we had sort of been dreading what we found given the state of the room. I can only assume other rooms have already been updated, as we partly based our booking on the rave reviews given on here. Otherwise, the hosts were welcoming and accomodating, and it was clean as mentioned. Just not what we were expecting!

We took advantage of a kgb deal and stayed here for two night bed and breakfast. The Maynard is well cared for and we enjoyed our brief stay here. The weather on our first day was cold and wet with a freezing wind ,so it was good to return to the warmth of the Maynard. We were disappointed the bar was closed and there were no bar meals available. This must be the practice in October. You get what you pay for and it was very good value Bed and Breakfast. The cooked breakfast comes without toast, .If you are on a deal there usually is a £5 charge to include juice, cereal and toast..Generally this was a very comfortable establishment but not a hotel because of lack of hotel facilities It is a very good B and B,and as such I highly commend it.

We have just returned home after spending another incredible holiday at the Maynard Hotel. Stuart and Angelia are such wonderful people and we really enjoy staying with them. We would have no hesitation in recommending a stay in the company of such perfect hosts, who do everything in their power to make your stay so very enjoyable and memorable.

My mother and I stayed at the Maynard for two nights on a KGB Deal. As twin rooms were fully booked for our required dates we were offered an upgrade to a family room for an additional fee, which we took advantage of.

Well located hotel just 2 minutes walk from the Esplanade in the South Bay area, you can see the sea as you walk out of the hotel but the rooms are not sea view unless you have a front facing room and you like to hang out of the window and crane your neck to the right which I’d strongly recommend against doing. The cliff lift down to the spa is located at the end of the street and you can see for miles in each direction from this point. A lovely place to sit and take in the view. The town centre is a 10-15 minute stroll away across the foot bridge, or if you wish to drive into town (bear in mind the streets are subject to a one way system in this area) its approximately 5 minutes from Brunswick shopping centre and the car park at the Palm Court hotel. The hotel is also located just off Filey Road, which will take you out towards Cayton Bay, Filey and Bridlington following the cliffs.

On arrival we found a note on the door to say that check in was available before 1pm or after 4pm. As we arrived shortly after 1pm I called the number displayed on the door and was advised to take a parking disc from the porch and display on the kerb side accordingly, which at least allowed us to park the car safely and for free whilst we had a wander in the sunshine. We checked in around 4.30pm after some lunch and a walk around the town centre in the lovely sunshine. We later obtained a permit from the hotel with a scratch panel which allowed us parking in the 3L area for free until the end of our stay-very handy!

Our family room was large, at the front of the property with a large bay window. The zip link bed was not separated as requested at the time of booking, however it was a very large bed so not too much of a problem. There were two additional pull out beds underneath, a 3 seater sofa and an armchair. The bed had a half tester, there were matching nets on the windows for privacy and apart from being a little cold until the heaters got working (one of them didn’t by the way) the room was pleasant. The ceiling could’ve done with repapering, and the décor wasn’t to my taste personally but everything was clean and tidy, the furniture was solid and sturdy and there was plenty of storage space. The bathroom had a shower (no bath) and was clean, even hand wash and shower gel were provided along with plenty of clean white towels. We left a note on the door on our second day to request a toilet roll and more coffee, and mentioned that there was no need to service the room as we had plenty of towels and the beds were made by ourselves anyway. This was respected and we returned from our day out to find our toilet roll and coffee in a bag on the door handle as requested.

In regards to sleep quality, I’m not the best sleeper and nor is my mother which is not any fault of the hotel however on one particular night the wind made the old windows bang and rattle intermittently which kept us awake.

The breakfast is served downstairs in the basement in a rather cramped but sufficient room between 0800 and 0900. A little early for my liking when I’m on holiday, but then again it’s my choice whether I wish to go down or not. The full English breakfast consisted of the usual-sausage, egg, bacon, mushrooms, beans, hash brown and some toast and you may help yourself to condiments, jams etc from the bar area. Tea and coffee also served, along with juice and cereals, fruit and yogurt.

The hallway of the hotel is like a mini tourist information office, offering all kinds of literature and leaflets on the local area and theatres/cinemas that you may just help yourself to. A lovely touch that meant we didn’t have to traipse around looking for this information.

May I also mention that our room was on the second floor of the hotel. We had to climb 2 and a half split flights to get there with our cases, and obviously throughout our stay. Not a problem for my mother and I as we are active people, but if you have any kind of walking difficulties you may wish to request a room on a low floor or double check to see if they have ground floor rooms available before making a booking as they do not appear to have a lift.

If you do like to walk, we managed to get on to the Cleveland Way for a walk just past the Spa, heading out towards Cayton Bay. It’s well marked out and even the first couple of miles were interesting-ranging from cliff edge views across the bay to Scarborough harbour to little ravines flanked by woodland and narrow paths past the golf range. Great for short or long walks.

Overall a nice stay. Do not be put off by the bedraggled appearance of the exterior-yes, it’s dated but it’s all very clean inside and I wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again

Room Tip: If you find climbing stairs difficult ask about having a room on a low floor as there is no lift to...

Hotel is immaculate from walking into front door, bed was really comfortable and obviously of high quality, really delicous breakfast, couldn't fault it in any way.
