“Traditional hotel with good food and surprisingly good service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2013

We had a three day mini break staying here on a Dinner, Bed & Breakfast basis in April. The price was very competitive; the food was good quality and tasty, the menu varied. It is very much a traditional seaside hotel - not a modern place with identical rooms - and very nice because of it. Everything was clean and tidy, the decor was a little shabby in places but this was not a problem given the style of the property and the excellent value for money we received. The staff were very attentive and the service was excellent. All in all a very enjoyable stay - we will return.

Quite comfortable room, good food available both as "bar snacks" and restuarant, welcoming staff, views over the sea, location good - on a hill not too far from the town (within walking distance) - a welcome break

This hotel doesn't let you down. This was our fifth visit over the last couple of years and we have enjoyed every visit. The staff are extremely helpful and it is good to see that many of the same faces remain with the hotel. The rooms are well sized and comfortable but not stylish in any way. The clientele are generally elderly and are enjoying themselves.
The breakfasts are the usual very full British selection, lunches are varied and reasonably priced and are served in the lounge and dinners are four courses of a good standard.
The location is excellent, very close to Connaught Gardens and a very easy walk along the promenade into the most delightful town. However I would not recommend Sidmouth for the young as there seem to be no clubs in town.
This is an excellent hotel if you want a quiet restful stay in perhaps the best preserved English seaside town. We love it there.

We stayed for 2 nights in March and had a lovely restful time at this hotel. It's a short walk ( downhill there and uphill back ) to the sea front of the lovely town of Sidmouth. It's situated next to the Connaught Gardens, so plenty of walks around. We had such a great room, large, dual aspect so very sunny, window in the bathroom too and best of all, a door opening onto a small balcony with a distance view of the sea ! Very clean and comfortable, lovely towels, grab rails in the bathroom ( and in the corridor ), furniture was dated but then the whole hotel was, very comfortable though and had a nostalgic charm to it. The restaurant seemed very formal ( ties and jackets in the evening for some ) and the service was very efficient, although I think as all of the staff spoke English as their second language ( East European ) there wasn't any informal chat between guests and staff, which would have enhanced the atmosphere. A real bonus was a cooked to order main course at breakfast, very good indeed. We would definitely stay again, I think it's the type of hotel once you have been, you would want to make it one to regularly return to.

Room Tip: Room 34 is dual aspect with a window also in the bathroom, and a little balcony with a view of the s...

We stayed for 3 nights in March - booking a standard room with sea view. The room was large with plenty of storage - though the furniture was slightly dated. However it was spotlessly clean and also had a door out onto the terrace - which had it been warmer I imagine it would have been very pleasant sitting outside looking across the pool to the sea views. Parts of the hotel do look a little tired or dated - but everywhere was clean, very comfortable and all the staff provided excellent service, even during the Mothers day lunch and afternoon tea - when they were extremely busy. We felt the breakfast provided a good selection of fruit, cereals and also cooked breakfast choice and the evening meals were also well cooked and well presented. The hotel is well situated for a gentle stroll into Sidmouth, or along the esplanade.
We would certainly be happy to return, hopefully in the warmer weather - and the only niggling issue for us was there was no wifi (free or otherwise) available in the bedrooms. The hotel is perhaps suited more to the more mature guests rather than families with young children.

Room Tip: Always ask for a sea view

Have to say that we were very disappointed with this hotel and cannot understand all of the good reviews on this site. I would say that if you like stylish boutique hotels, this is a million miles away.

We booked a superior feature room with sea views which was ok in terms of furnishings (apart from blood stain on duvet) but thr balcony, outside furniture and outlook was so tired. The rest of the hotel looked like Fawlty Towers.

Poor service on reception - no apology for blood stain and not warm personality. Finally, breakfast quality akin to Travelodge.

I recently visited the SIdmouth Harbour Hotel, The Westcliff, for a romantic weekend break. The views from the lounge bar are truely stunning. The restaurant was excellent value for money although the bar prices were a little on the high side. The food both in the lounge bar and the restaurant were excellent, offering an extensive range of local produce and good home cooked cuisine. A very enjoyable weekend!

Room Tip: Any room with a sea view is well worth it, the views are spectacular!
