“Lovely Hotel, Perfectly Placed”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2013

I only stayed at the Bedford for two nights, but it was more than enough for me to say how friendly and accommodating all the staff were. The check in was very pleasant and easy.
The breakfast was excellent and the food in the dining room and bar was very good and was good value for money.
My room was very spacious, clean and well equipped. It was nicely decorated, as was the rest of the hotel that I saw. The hotel had a nice relaxed feel about it and all my requests were met fully.
For me one of the big plus points was its location to the sea front and all town amenities that were within walking distance. This meant I did not need to use my car during my stay (although I did use my bike which I had brought with me)
This is the first time I have stayed at the Bedford, even though I have stayed in Sidmouth many times before, but I would be more than happy to stay here again. Highly recommended.

The Bedford Hotel is in a great location and the staff are friendly. However, for over £150 per night, the room was a little tired and really needs a refurb. The bathroom was very basic (the shower running hot and cold), the mattress was showing its age and the whole room had a musty, damp smell to it. The lift is also an issue. It's one of the old style lifts where you have to pull across a metal grill in order for it to work. If the last person who used the lift forgot to do this, it simply didn't work and we invariably had to take the stairs.
On the positive side, the breakfast was good, served by friendly staff.

We stayed in room 18 - what a room!
Lovely balcony overlooking the seafront.
We wanted somewhere close to the centre of Sidmouth and this was perfect.
I would describe the hotel as having two halves - one very modern with a chic bar and restaurant and the other much more traditional.
The staff were friendly and helpful.
All in all a great visit

Room Tip: Room 18 is a gem which has a great balcony overlooking the sea

Perfectly located on the Esplanade, with stunning views of the Jurassic coast, the Bedford Hotel with its Georgian exterior and modern bedrooms was a delight to stay at. The staff were friendly and attentive. The food in the residents restaurant was delicious, plentiful and always served with a smile. We booked the D.B.B package and considered it good value. Would I recommend it, yes. Would I return again, definitely.

The Bedford is a grand Georgian building! Inside the bedrooms are freshly decorated, light and airy. They are also comfortable and spotlessly clean. We had a premier sea view room with a balcony. It couldn't have been a better view and it was lovely being able to hear the sea! We had booked dinner, bed and breakfast but after the first night decided to eat in the hotel's bistro style restaurant "Pyne's". The food in the dining room was fine and the rate extremely reasonable but it felt very old fashioned. There was more choice and certainly more of a modern feel and ambience in Pyne's. The food was excellent and the portions amazingly generous and we were happy to pay the extra for the a la carte menu there. Drinks, including wine, were reasonably priced. The public rooms are not as modern as the bedrooms but comfortable enough and very spacious. Service throughout was excellent from the moment we arrived. We didn't manage to get a space in the hotel car park in the four days we were there but there is a car park across the road which is very convenient and cost £12 for 24 hours. In fact the hotel is very convenient for everything......the sea, the town (which is quaint and lovely), and buses which we used to travel round the area rather than the car. We had a great break with the view from our balcony being one of the best ever!

Room Tip: We had room 25-a premier sea view room with balcony.

We stayed for three nights at this charming hotel. The staff were, without exception, lovely. They couldn't do enough for us, without being over the top or sycophantic. Whilst the hotel seems cater predominantly for pensioners, there's no reason why anyone couldn't enjoy a stay there. The Bedford gets a lot of customers returning again and again because of its warm welcome and good service.
The hotel has lots of character, without being too old-fashioned. It has wonky floors, beautiful old sash windows (some of which don't work!) and is nicely decorated. The hotel is on the sea front and many rooms have views of the beach and sea.
We were booked in for breakfast and dinner, and both were excellent; there were meals to suit all tastes.
A few small minus points:
* Our room was HOT. Hot hot hot. The weather was excellent, but the room was very stuffy with two adults and two children sleeping in it, and there was no air conditioning and no fan. We slept without covers or clothes, but didn't get a good night's sleep and woke up drenched in sweat. This wouldn't be a regular occurrence as it was unusually hot, but something to be aware of.
* There was no blackout lining on the bedroom curtains, so it was really difficult getting the children to sleep and they woke up at 5am when the sun came up. I don't know whether this is true of other rooms, but you really do need blackout curtains in a south-facing bedroom - whether you travel with children or not. I prefer not to wake up at the crack of dawn...

We had another two night stay at the Bedford recently and the hotel continues to keep up a good standard. Although a very old building great attention is shown to the decor so that the hotel can compete with others on the seafront. It almost succeeds in this respect.
LIKE : * The warm welcome always given on arrival.
* The excellent breakfast.
* The homely feel of the hotel
DISLIKE : *The very hard bed and heavy duvet that would keep an eskimo warm (this was June!)
*The very basic shower facility - connected with bath taps which run alternately hot and cold.
*The grave lack of parking space (hotel only has 6 spaces at the rear) and an apparent disinterest of staff to improve the situation or offer much advice. Quite hard to find a spot in the street.
*'Sea view' was a 'Side view' overlooking a carpark - but good if you ignored it.
*Sloping floor in room which, for older folk, would be a problem.

Room Tip: Compare others if you can - particularly ones with adequate parking.
