“Fails to live up to expectations”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2014

Stayed here as part of a trip to Legoland Windsor. Trip started badly when taxi overcharged part of the group to travel from Heathrow Airport to the hotel - would advise pre-booking taxi from airport.

The hotel itself is no where near public transport so to get between Legoland and hotel you either need to have a car or use taxis. There is an early morning shuttle from the hotel to the park but we never made it. The only way to get to Slough train station is via taxi as well.

The range of food at breakfast was pathetic and you constantly had to ask for things to be re-stocked e.g. glasses for fruit juice, bread for the toaster etc the hot breakfast buffet was unappealing. Staff had to be asked several times for coffee or to re-stock the buffet.

The main hotel restaurant was not open on the first night of the stay despite being told by the receptionist that it was. The bar, as is the case in most hotels, was over priced. The choice of food on the bar menu was tiny. There is a Chinese restaurant within the hotel as well but the menu didn't appeal to the kids.

There was a well equipped gym. The swimming pool was busy but that I suspect had a lot to do with the fact children could only use the pool between certain hours so there was a rush to use it before they were barred. The steam room was the size if a cupboard so as soon as 2 people were inside, it became over-crowded.

The rooms were basic but well maintained. Most staff were helpful and friendly.

The hotel looked better online than it did in real life. On the plus side there was a games room that the children could play that had table football, a pool table and a x-box.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for taking the time and trouble to place this review. Sorry to hear that you were overcharged by a heathrow based taxi service, not sure who you used but would agree with your advice that it is advisable to prebook, preferably using our recommended 'Windsor Cars'.
I have forwarded your comments regarding our breakfast and bar food offering to our food & beverage steering committee, however, there are actually over 14 cold items and 9 hot choices at breakfast and the bar menu has 8 main courses, 7 sandwhich choices, (two being hot) plus Paninis, light bites and pies.
Pleased that you enjoyed the gym, the pool is open all day to children, with booking slots a good idea, until the pool is given over to serious swimmers and health club members at 8pm, there is signage at reception and at the entrance to the Club to that effect.
Thank you for your kind comments about our staff which I will be happy to pass on.
I do hope that we will have the opportunity to welcome you back, I will oversee your complete stay for you if that helps, if you just contact me direct.
Kindest regards & best wishes from the General Manager, Management Team & Staff at the Copthorne Hotel Slough - Windsor.

On arrival at the hotel, the hotel is very unwelcoming. The outside of the hotel building and car park are tatty, outdated and in need of much needed maintenance and a good clean.

Thankfully the inside of the hotel is much better, although please be aware the hotel has no lifts to the underneath parking so you will need to carry your luggage/bags up two flights of stairs, so you may want to consider dropping off at reception before parking the car.

On arrival the reception staff were very unfriendly, not welcoming and not polite.

The room was surprising very spacious, well equipped including tea/coffee facilities and a flat screen television.

The cleanliness of the room was reasonably good, although the shaver socket in the bathroom had some suspicious marks/stains which showed it had not been cleaned thoroughly. The shower was surprising powerful, although only one of us could have a shower because they had forgotten to put two bath towels in the room even though it had been booked for two people! 40 minute wait and two telephone calls to reception later the additional bath towel finally arrived! Very unimpressed! By this time one of us had finished showering, dried hair and fully dressed, before the other towel finally arrived, causing a very late dinner! The sleep was very poor due to the extremely firm pillows with no others available or offered. The furniture, bathroom and decor in the room looked scruffy, out dated, marked and in need of painting or replacing.

The staff in the leisure facilities area were very friendly and polite. The hotel also gives free towels to use when using the leisure facilities, which is very good. We did not use the gym, although it looked very comprehensive. The swimming pool changing rooms were very small, dirty and tatty. The swimming pool was not very big and was unmanned!, which I still can not believe. The hotel needs to invest in this area of the hotel as it is very poor quality and poor value for money. The hotel lacks a swimming pool for children, which meant the pool was not big enough to accommodate all the children and without any supervision the children were allowed to jump in and out. Because the swimming pool was unmanned, there was no control over the amount of adults and children using the swimming pool or even checking the chlorine levels! The jacuzzi was very small and not working, the steam room was closed and not working (awaiting parts), so this just left the sauna, just not very good and poor value for money. The swimming pool, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna are in need of general maintenance, cleaning, supervision and some much needed investment! Other than the gym this area represents very poor value for money and a massive disappointment. The only bonus with the facilities was that we were only staying for the one night!

The breakfast was very good and the staff were very polite and helpful. The food offering was very good and the breakfast was very good value for money. They only offered one hot drink with breakfast, so the drinks offering was limited, overall the breakfast was very good.

On checking out the reception staff were very busy and overworked. Again very unwelcoming and not polite. Even though we had been waiting for some time to check out, we were made to wait even longer when they finished with the person in front, they made us wait and decided to answer the telephone, very frustrating!

Overall the hotel is reasonable, not really awful, but neither was it great, just very average. One night was long enough, you would not want to stay much longer!

Dear Gavin L

Thank you for placing this review. I am sorry that some elements of your stay did not meet your expectations and you had cause to comment on this forum prior to sharing with us.

I would reassure not only you but also anyone reading this review that all our health club staff are trained lifeguards and have all attained that National Lifeguard Qualification and are assessed for competency each month as recommended by the RLSS. All guests are told on entry that the pool is not supervised constantly, although 30 minute checks are in operation and logs kept to ensure this is the case. Children under 15 years old are not allowed to enter the pool unless supervised and bather loads are checked during these checks to ensure that levels are never breached.

Regarding your comments on the Chlorine levels; please be assured that on reviewing the logs the results demonstrated they were well within industry recommendations and naturally stringent testing is in place on every shift to ensure this is always the case.

We value feedback and especially when it is constructive and allows us an opportunity to redeem ourselves during our guests visits, unfortunately we were not able to do this during your stay as the comments were posted after you had left and for that I am also sorry as we would have really liked to have demonstrated that your experience was certainly not what we would have your remember about us. Our team here are extremely dedicated and passionate and I am sorry that was not your experience when checking in and hope that we have an opportunity to demonstrate that we really do care about our guests and work hard to achieve their expectations.

Thank you and regards

David Faull

Although we arrived very late at night the lobby staff were friendly and helpful, there is a special check in area for kiddies manned by a Lego dragon which I thought was a nice touch for those visiting Lego Land - convenient for the station, it was a 5 minute taxi ride in the morning (10-15 during busier times). Plenty of parking too

Dear Guest,
Thank you so much for your lovely comments. Very pleased that our staff were helpful to you especially late at night when you were travelling with tired children.
Our lego dragon is very special to us here, we named her Ruth after a revenue manager we once had (who we all though the world of I hasten to add), it always amuses me when we tell kids her name is Ruth (though not the reason) and they call out hello Ruth and bye bye Ruth. She has left us now I'm sorry to say but I hope very much that she reads this.......I can expect a call!!
We will all look forward to welcoming you back - hopefully this season - and thank you again for sharing your kind words.
Kindest regards & best wishes from the General Manager, Management Team & Staff at the Copthorne Hotel Slough - Windsor.

We stayed here as part of a Lego Land package with our two sons aged 5 & 8. The hotel sounded great for children, particularly as it provided a Lego Land package. When we arrived to check in the receptionist could only be described as rude. There was a seprate check in desk for children - or the pretense of one. She basically ignored the children and scowled at them when they were excited about the Lego Dragon figure on the 'children's' reception desk. She gave us a letter and just said the hotel info is in there and told us our room number. Didn't direct us to the lift or explain how to get to our room. I asked where the advertised children's rooms / facilities where and she just said down the corridor. The 'children's' entertainment areas were basically small dingy conference rooms with a pool table and table football in - neither had balls or cues !!!
The rooms were ok - a bit dated decor but they were clean and on the plus side they had left activity packs on the beds for the children. Plenty of hot water and the shower was powerful.
We slept well and the beds were comfy enough.
We went for breakfast which was basic but ok. plenty of choice and food of a reasonable quality - although the coffee was awful!!
The main problem was the staff. they did not have any idea what they were doing. We had to ask three times for some juice for our son - eventually went and got some our self. They appeared to be wandering around, not knowing what too do. They were clearing tables one cup at a time.
On the plus side it is in a great location for Lego Land :-)
We had a good break but unfortunately this was not due to the hotel. Don't think I would stay here again - I would probably look at other hotel packages in the area.

Room Tip: More appropriate for business guests than families in my opinion

I booked a conference/event at this hotel on behalf of my Company and just wanted to just express my thanks to Jas (Meeting Events) and Mark (Assistant Conference/Events) for making it all run so smoothly. I was not present myself but have been told that all arrangements were as requested and the food was enjoyed by all those attending. Many thanks - no doubt we will be booking again next year.
