We live a 5 minute walk from Earle by Simon Rimmer and my wife chose the restaurant on a whim and we had a lovely meal.
We were the first to be seated, a 5.30pm booking on account of two little children at home being looked after by granny. Service-wise, it was just OK. But food-wise, this restaurant is outstanding.
So if you're accustomed to your service levels to be on a par with the cuisine, then change your expectations and you won't be disappointed. Don't get me wrong, we will definitely come back, we signed up for their e-mail list and as "our local" restaurant, we feel very privileged to have such great dining options almost at our door step.
We chose the set menu, good value at £20.95 per person, with a couple of cocktails to start with and a reserve Rioja to accompany our meal.
My wife loved the panko-crummed, thai spiced potato cake with coleslaw and wasabi cream. I had the chicken liver parfait and wasn't disappointed. My main course was the beef short rib and the meat was tender, juicy and succulent - just superb.
What was amiss with the service? Minor things, but I expect more from a restaurant of this calibre cuisine; (1) slow to offer us drinks to start with (2) wine was poured carelessly (wine drops on the table, down the side of my glass and down the neck of the wine bottle (3) it took a lot of neck craning and intermittent swivelling to catch someone's attention for the bill.
None of these service flaws will put us off another visit. This is a local restaurant after all. But when you have amazing food, it's a shame the same attention to detail that occurs in the kitchen isn't carried through to the dining room.
