“Nice location and room”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2014

Was initially confused on arrival as owner wasn't about, but checked my email on phone and she had sent a clear message explaining which room was ours.
We had very comfy beds, but the king size could have been a little longer for very tall people.
Full breakfast in morning was nicely done, and staff were very helpful.
Would stay here again.
If you're looking for food in the evening in Ballater and like curries, I recommend you book the Lochnagar Brasserie. We had a fantastic meal there.

Schoolhouse is quite near Balmoral and Crathie Kirk church - where incidentally I was able to see the Queen! - and the price is quite modest considering the level of accommodation provided. Everything is constructed from reclaimed wood and even some of the windows once were part of a local church. You can listen the owner tell stories by the fireplace, relax in the comfortable bedrooms, view the local wildlife, or relax with a cup of tea in the dining room. I got lost coming into town from Glasgow, but the owner was happy to pick me up when I arrived. She and her husband prepared a lovely breakfast in the morning and some fellow travelers drove me to church afterwards. It is a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere and I highly recommend it.

Room Tip: There are rooms able to accommodate a larger group or family or even just a single, weary traveler.

We are so pleased we found this lovely b and b. The owners were abroad but the managers Fern and Ross, were an absolute pleasure. Nothing was any trouble and they could not have been more accommodating. The School House is not a luxury establishment nor, does it claim to be.In fact there is nothing pretentious about this beautiful house.Simply, a very clean welcoming quirky and enticing home with the most comfortable rooms and delicious breakfast anyone could desire.I would recommend The School House without hesitation to any traveller. We have already booked a return stay. A truly characterful place with the nicest of atmospheres. Well presented and so well managed.

Lovely place to stay, very welcoming. Room large, clean and comfortable with wonderful shower. This was our first visit to Ballater and hopefully we will be back and will stay at the School House again. Breakfast was great and Fern and Ross who were standing in for the owners couldn't have done more to look after us. Thank you for a great end to our Scottish holiday.

The School House is a really well restored place sensitively done by the current owners. The place was spotlessly clean, the beds comfortable and warm, each room having an ensuite with decent showers. Cathy the owner is friendly and has the unique quality of being attentive yet not intrusive which made my family's stay for the weekend (for a wedding) that bit extra special, we filled all the rooms and nothing was too much trouble. I would highly recommend this guesthouse and will be returning as soon as I can get back up to the beautiful town of Ballater.

Just a great find in town. Stayed here while running the Trail Race at Balmoral Castle.
Cathy was just so nice and the place was very clean. We had the triple at the top of the stairs and was just perfect for three. Plenty of room for everyone.
Would stay here again.
