After having a fantastic break at the Loch Fyne Hotel and reading the description on the website about the Deeside Inn being refurbished, I had no qualms in booking a short break. How disappointed were we? On checking in at 4pm our room was not ready. We were given keys and told to come back in a while! When we did get into the room to unpack i was bitterly disappointed. The room was to the back of the hotel, the view was of a dirty yard and scaffolding lying all over . The windows were dirty and in need of replacement badly. The bathroom was a disgrace, with chuncks of enamel missing from the bath, hairs from previous guests on the splashback, badly marked wash basin, toilet roll holder held together with sellotape. I requested a room change and was told the hotel was full and that all bathrooms were of a similar standard, so we had to stay put. The shower was located in the middle of the bath and there was only one shower curtain, therefore it was impossible to keep the bathroom floor dry. That evening at dinner resembled Faulty Towers. A coach party had arrived and obviously there were too many guests for staff to cope with. Our waitress took our starter dishes away and promptly came straight back out with our main course. I had chosen a seafood platter and i wonder how long it had been made before serving as the salmon was brown and the plate was certainly far from chilled. All in all we were in the dining room for a 3 course meal in under 30 minutes flat. No freshly made food there then ! No one offered drinks and we had to give a time when we wanted breakfast the next day, so much so for having a leisurely breakfast when it suited !
Breakfast next morning was a joke. We were seated next to the serving station where you help yourself to cereal, yogurt etc , when the coach party arrived en masse. There was no orderly fashion to getting their cereal at all. People were leaning on my husbands shoulders as he tried to eat his cereal, to reach for bowls etc. We actually got up and moved tables it was so bad. The waiter then brought his cooked breakfast before he had even had his cereal and before i had even got to sit down and read the menu ! Breakfast next day we ordered poached eggs on toast and we got one poached egg each. When asking if this was the normal portion bearing in mind most people are having a full scottish breakfast we were told that we should have said one or two when we ordered ! The menu says eggs and the waitress never asked one or two so i ask you !?Dinner that evening was slightly better as we managed to book early before the masses came in. We had also realised if we wanted a drink with dinner to bring it to the dining room ourselves ! Dinner on the third night we had it sussed, order form the a la carte and your food will be fresher ie not in mass production.
There was no hairdrier in the room and i had to request one at reception, luckily there was one available. 0ur room was not cleaned at all during our stay and the bin therefore was never emptied. The bed was ok and clean, about the only positive thing to say. I felt really let down by the description of the hotel on the crerar website and obviously review wise you are eyes are drawn to the really good one where someone actually had a refurbished room. Reception staff on the Friday were not at all welcoming and really could do with wearing some kind of uniform so guests know they are talking to staff. The lady in question was eating a meal at the desk while trying to check people in and was incredibly rude to a young lady in the reception area. Not a good first impression.
Ballater itself was a lovely place to visit and i would go back but definately not to this hotel. I was scared to complain about the food because you see so many Tv shows that show how food can be sabotaged if they think guests are complaining, so we put up with it.
Would not or could not recommend this hotel.
ask for a refurbished room and clean bathroom
