“Getting there but could do better.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 2, 2011

This part refurbished hotel has been renamed the Ballater Inn and taken over by Crerar Hotels. There is obviously still work to be done on the refurbishment, but the hotel is clean and tidy. The Hotel only reopened at the begining of April 2011 so there are still some small issues that need attention. Overall a good hotel with quite good food, great location and some great deals. Very much geared towards the older generation of visitor.
Hotel has some free wifi if you wander about and to get a connection.
Staff seem a bit disorganised and had to wait some time before seeing bar staff.

Room Tip: Some excellent walks in the area - try Loch Muick

We have just returned from a four night dinner bed and breakfast break having had an enjoyable time, we had one of the refubished rooms which was as you see it on the photo, some bedrooms are still to be done but this is work in progress as is the painting of the windows outside. Both were being done while we were there with as far as we could see no impact on anyones holiday. All in all Crerar have brought new life into the hotel, well done, your staff are a credit to you the food excellent, rooms very clean. The only niggle was the noisy plumbing above our room which although intermittent did disturb our sleep at times. As we have said in our title it really was excellent value for the money we paid and will return.

We had a lovely time at the hotel with our 9month old son. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The food was of high quality with a good choice to choose from.
Will be sure to return.

hotel was lovely, with delicious food and great service. Rooms were modern and with all the ammenities you would need. breakfast is a cold buffet with hot plates brough to your table, again this was delicious and as much as you could eat.

the public rooms are very nicley decorated, so that you really get the feel of the coaching inn. the log fires in the lounges make it extra cosy.

the area around Ballater is one of the most beautiful i have seen in all my time touring scotland. i can assure you we will visiting again ans staying at the Deeside Inn.

Just back from a 3 night stay in this hotel and I can say that we had a really nice time and got really good value for money. The hotel has just re-opened after being closed for some time and have had a partial refurbishment. The food is extremly good, and the staff are really friendly and helpful, I have dietry requirements and they accommodated this really well. We had a refurbished room, it was basic but very clean and new, the bed was comfortable the bathroom has been decorated the bath etc are still fairly old. They have a problem with no of tables in restaurant and have to do relays, but they have a booking system which seems to work and they offer this at breakfast too, which I think is great otherwise you could be waiting for tables at peak times. I would go back to this hotel and stay.

We had some reservations before we left for our Sunday to Friday break because we'd read a couple of reviews indicating that many rooms haven't been touched. The room we were allocated (208) had more or less been done up and would have taken no time at all to finish. In fact, we had such a good deal for dinner, bed and breakfast that we would have happily finished the job off ourselves! A couple of walls needed a coat of paint and some "stuff" is missing - no waste bin or hairdryer. These are really minor niggles and I feel ashamed at criticising the place at all because of the bargain price.
The staff were without exception friendly and helpful and the food was fine. We greatly appreciated the free wifi in the public areas - handy for researching where to go and what to do.
The hotel is in a handy central location and there is certainly no shortage of stuff to do in the area, particularly given how lucky we were with the weather. The Deeside Way (old railway line) between Ballater and Aboyne is great for cycling or walking - with a stop for coffee in Dinnet. Loads of other good walks too. We also did quite a few castles (Corgarff, Crathes, Kildrummy, Drum) so no shortage of stuff to do.
In summary, then, there are a load of things still to be completed in the hotel and hopefully they will get there soon. That said, I have paid four times the price of this hotel for half the quality, so I for one certainly won't be complaining.
