“A great place for a solo traveller”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

I ate at the Alexandra Hotel several times this year and every time was excellent. The food is great, home cooked and large portions. I love their fish and chips, lasagne and steak and ale pie. I also sent numerous people from the B&B I worked in there and every single person commented on the great food and great welcome. I often ate there alone and felt completely looked after and comfortable. All the staff are excellent in this family run hotel. Some great real ales too.

Just returned from a 3 night break at 'The Alexandra' and had an excellent time. Fiona and her team are so friendly and welcoming and cannot do enough for you. It is a cosy comfortable inn, with a small but busy bar with a mix of locals and visitors. Real ales from Cairngorm Brewery which my husband really enjoyed! Food is good quality 'pub food' and fish and chips were fantastic.
The rooms are comfortable and very clean, nice shortbread biscuits and complimentary bottled water are a nice touch and towels changed daily. Yes the bathrooms could do with an update but we had a good shower and everything we needed. For the price it is great value.
Breakfast was excellent quality with a varied choice.
Ballater is a lovely base for touring this beautiful part of Scotland. There are a variety of places to eat and drink but if you are planning a trip and like to stay in an inn, please try 'The Alexandra'. You won't be disappointed!

Room Tip: Room 5 at the back is comfortable and quieter than those on the front of Hotel

We stopped in the Alexandra for our mid-day meal and enjoyed a terrific pub lunch outside. Our choices proved to be great - lasagna and haddock and chips, in particular. The fish portion was huge so I was able to give everyone a taste. De-lish. Our friendly waitress said it was the best in the village - I would go broader than that! Service was not the fastest but it was a beautiful day and our first on the road after the flight over so there was much to enjoy at the Alexandra, in Ballater.

Six of us ate dinner here on the Saturday night and it was excellent. The portions were huge. I had the haggis balls (very tasty haggis) followed by the most enourmous haddock and chips ever. Fraid I couldn't quite manage pudding.
A lovely homely hotel, would recommend!

My partner and I choose to book the Alexandra as it had great review and a central location. The Staff were very welcoming upon our arrival and shown to our room. The Deco is what you would expect form a family run hotel, quaint and homely. The facilities were great bed was comfortable, shower was decent had a nice bit of power to it, over all the room was clean.

There is a bar which we had not used on this occasion but have been too several times before, its shows the sport if your into that and they serve food which you can either eat in the bar or eat in the restaurant.

The Breakfast was great porridge, cereals, fruit and the all-important Scottish Breakfast which was just superb.

I would defiantly recommend here.

This is a not to be missed hotel restaurant in the heart of Ballater, amid the wonderful Cairngorm scenery.
Try the Whale and Tatties, aka fish and chips, and the beef lasagne - they are wonderful.
