“First class dining”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2013

We took my elderly 83 year old mother to the Barns Restaurant and I must say the service, food and atmosphere was 1st class even though we were looking forward to dining on the terrace which unfortunately the weather did not permit. However, Natasha and Maria soon relocated us in the library area which was tranquil and my mother could still watch the boats as they passed.

The Barns Hotel, Bedford, is a beautiful hotel set in fantastic grounds. The buildings have great character, the rooms are comfortable, the food quality is good but a few points let them down.
First, the presentation of the food at the reception wasn't as had been expected or originally agreed. This will be taken up further by others. The service at breakfast was lacking. There were a lot of people attending but the staff were slow acting on requests.
The reception counter was only staffed by one person in the morning so at check out time, there were a lot of people waiting. The amount that they tried to charge me was more than the original reservation had quoted when I booked. The lesser sum was charged but I had to demonstrate this with the confirmation of my reservation back in March.
These points, in my view, let down this establishment.

Dear Bob B,

Thank you very much for taking the time to leave us a review, although I am extremely sorry it was necessary for you to do so. I was most disappointed to read some of your negative comments.
I would like to start by offering my most sincere apologies in regards to the issues with the standard of service you received during your breakfast and check out.
Unfortunately on this occasion we have fallen short of the high standards we set ourselves. I do hope that soon you will give us another chance so we can prove this is most definitely not our usual standard.

Kind regards,

Regular user. Rooms always consistently good. This time the breakfast experience was marvellous. The young gentleman was attentive and service quick Excellent
This hotel provides very good value but I wight they would put on some decent beers and change the menu. It doesn't seem to have changed in two years

We booked an impulse weekend getaway through Telegraph Hand-Picked (secret escapes); describing the Barns as a countryside retreat, coupled with other phrases such as 'idyllic' and 'sedate'. It is fair to say that on arrival, we were disappointed with the description given through the company; the close proximity of the dual carriageway gave a constant drone and our immediate impression was that this was far from tranquil. There was nothing wrong with our room, apart from the fact that it faced the car park and road beyond, which would not normally have been an issue. However, the windows were poor and would not shut; hence the noise from the road was unavoidable. I made a number of trips to reception to ask if we could be moved to a river-facing room or if there was anything they could do. unfortunately, the hotel was full and there was nothing the hotel could do. We were then visited by the operations manager, Brian, who offered a move on our second night which quite frankly, transformed our weekend.

A room with a river view on the second night was what we had originally envisaged for a country retreat. The room was fantastic; top-notch furnishings and good-quality toiletries. More importantly, peaceful. The hotel also kindly gave a bottle of prosecco, you can certainly tell how good a hotel is by how they address situations.

We stayed on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis. At all times, the menu was varied, well-presented, and extremely satisfying. Breakfast was excellent considering it was a buffet, the quality of bacon and sausage was more synonymous with something you would normally receive at a guesthouse. The service we received by those on the front desk, and all restaurant staff was commendable and we left feeling refreshed.

What began as disappointment turned out to be a great stay, and I have no doubt that a major contributing factor to this was excellent hotel management and service. I do however have reservations about the descriptions given by other websites.

We stayed here for a last minute weekend break. The hotel is attractive and has plenty of car parking. The service was excellent; every member of staff was very keen to help in whatever way they could. Be aware that there are no lifts. and two (shortish) flights of stairs to the first floor. We upgraded our room on arrival to 'executive' which was modern, immaculately clean and had a huge, very comfortable bed. The linen was crisp, but I found the pillows inadequate when sitting up in bed -but this is only a minor detail. One definate criticism is that both of the double glazed units in the window had failed and were almost opaque as a result; as the window was very small this meant that the room could appear gloomy unless either the lights were on or the window open. In addition the external wooden frames were also badly in need of painting. This is not something that I expect from a 4* hotel.
The hotel is clearly a very popular venue for weddings. There were two during our two day stay, but the only disruption to us was the noise from the evening disco because we had the window open in the hot weather. I would take earplugs if this is likely to be a problem for you. According to a member of staff wedding parties are kept separate from other guests for the convenience and comfort of both and this worked well.
The food was fine and there was an excellent choice for breakfast. The restaurant is lovely and siting on the terrace overlooking the River Ouse was a definate highlight of our stay. We watched kingfishers, herons, swans and dozens of beautiful dragonflies while having a pre-dinner drink.
We would recommend a stay and are likely to return soon.

We stayed at The Barns for one night on their offer inc £50 contribution towards the evening meal, breakfast, bottle prosecco and chocs in room. All for £129 excellent value, the room was very comfortable inc the bed, the evening meal was pretty good the restaurant is very nice opening out onto the terrace which was great on such a warm evening. The location is very nice. We slept well as it is so peaceful, this is always important to me as where we live there is no traffic noise and I have stayed in fantastic hotels only to be kept awake by traffic.
My only quibble is the tea at breakfast was the worst ever, the food a buffet was varied and plentiful, but back to the tea they don't give you your own pot, they bring vacuum jugs around to the tables topping up your cup, but I thought they just filled with hot water in the kitchen and then immediately poured into your cup. This needs to addressed. They were very busy and noticed lots of people dissatisfied. We went back to our room and made our own tea there. The hospitality tray was very good numerous teas and decaf coffee and biscuits.
I think this is a popular wedding venue we peeked into the beautiful barn dressed for a wedding before we departed.
I would return and recommend it to anyone needing an overnight stay in Bedford. It was easy to find and has plenty of parking.

We stayed last night for a friends wedding reception. The staff were super friendly, excellent customer service.
We were very impressed with the room and the cleanliness of the entire hotel.
The wedding was fantastic and a lovely location.
The breakfast was nice and plentiful.
We had a sneaky peek at the suite that the bride and groom were staying in and it was exceptional.
Drinks were a little on the pricy side and room service was expensive. 2 sandwiches cost £17!
Overall I would highly recommend this hotel and would consider booking this again for a little getaway.
