“WONDERFUL - Simply Delightful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2012

We've been staying at High Houses for 9 years, sometimes 2 or 3 times a year. It is simply the best place in the Lake District. So unusual, so peaceful, so lovely. There is so much character, it is unbelivable.

The location is remote but if that's your thing, High Houses will be too. Stunning views towards Scotland, fantastic sunsets if you are lucky, birds singing, hens clucking, House Martins and Swallows darting around, open fires to warm your heart after a tough days on the Northern Fells.

Jill's cooking - delightful. She is a wonderful character, so warm and welcoming. We'd move in tomorrow if we could. Self catering is the preferred option now - Jill dropped off some wonderful dinners. And the eggs from the hens laid that morning are the tastiest ever!

High Houses is dog friendly and kids will love place. We certainly do.

We enjoy our pre-breakfast walks on the slopes of Binsey to check out the weather for the day - watch the rain in Borrowdale as we basked in sunshine. The walks locally are superb and you may not see another soul.

High Houses is good for the soul. Can't wait to go back soon.

Room Tip: 4 poster room - the comfiest huge bed I've ever slept on. And check out the views when you open...

We stayed with Jill at High Houses a year ago, and haven't stopped thinking about our stay ever since. We are longing to find the time to go back. A friend recommended it to us, knowing we could appreciate its quirkiness. 1697 is carved in the stone above the door, and I don't think much has changed since - and Jill encourages this feel with fires lit on chilly evenings, candles ablaze up the stairs as you rise to bed, and an old fashioned personal hospitality that can't be faked.

It sits high on a hill overlooking the Solway Firth in the distance and I swear there was hardly an electric light in view all night. Jill cooked us a delicious evening meal and was equally excellent at breakfast. We loved the fell behind the house and the sense of "Wildfell Hall".

It is a place to appeal to the country-lover, obviously - Chelsea it ain't - thank goodness. And it has such character that like a best friend who you have to forgive some idiosyncracies, this place defies pigeon-holing or comparisons with anywhere else in creation, I reckon.

It'll remain in my mind's eye, and all success to Jill who instinctively knows what's wanted and seems to furnish it by magic. And that's the word for High Houses - Magic!

From the beginning of our stay I felt like High Houses were home. Jill was a pleasure and the immaculate care that was taken in preserving this little piece of the past shows itself in the details in each room.
High houses is situated at the top of a property in Ireby and it looks to far out that you can actually see into Scotland out of the master suite window. The authenticity is astounding and my trip to England would have been nothing without this week long stop.
