“Brill deal”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2013

Deciding on a late break away we got a great deal for crown and mitre hotel from classic Britain. Car park was not the easiest to find but upon arrival at hotel We were pleased with room, on the small side but clean. Food was lovely for our evening meal, also breakfast in morning. Upgraded 2 nd evening for £10 each for valentines meal, was lovely. Thoroughly enjoyed hotel including location, perfect for shops. Didn't get to try swimming pool but hope to go back at some point.

Gillian & Richard
We have been coming to this Hotel since 1997,at least 3/4 times a year. We find the Staff very friendly & helpful, The food has always been very good & hot with plenty of choice. Breakfast is excellent. Our rooms have always been clean & comfortable. This is a Hotel with a lot of character & history, being central you can leave your car in the secure car park & go shopping right outside the door. it is also dog friendly which many hotels are not. I can not understand some of the negative reviews as all Hotels have some minor problems from time to time. Bar prices are no higher than other Hotels we have stayed in home & abroad. I can recommend this Hotel without hesitation. Looking forward to our next visit.

Room Tip: High front floors have good views

We booked the weekend dinner bed and breakfast special offer and it was excellent value for money.

Check In

Swiftly checked in and advised of our location in respect to the bars, shops and amenities. The swimming pool requires a key from reception and is easily obtained.

Room

We were at the rear of the hotel looking out onto the roof, very quiet and ideal for a good nights sleep. The room itself had a comfortable double bed, large wardrobe, dressing table, drawers and a tv (freeview). The bathroom had an excellent power shower over the bath and was clean and spacious enough.

Dinner

You book a time slot for dinner at reception, this saves any unnecessary waiting about.
The menu is set with three/four options per course. Rump or sirloin steak comes with a £2/£4 supplement. The food was of a good standard and we enjoyed our dinner on both evenings, I would recommend eating out if you are not on the DBB deal, as it is fairly expensive particularly if you opt for a bottle of wine with your meal.

Breakfast

Just as you would expect, something for everyone. Buffet style with full English, cereals, toast, pastries, orange juice, tea/coffee etc, it can get fairly busy but the table service was very good.

Swimming Pool

About 8metres long and 3 metres wide ideal if it is quiet but it was very very warm more like a steam room in temperature. £1 deposit for a locker. Take your robe from the room to save hassle.

Bar

Hotel bar has sky sports and is not excessively priced for a hotel. Sandwiches are available in the evening and we were lucky enough to get some after a night out which the duty manager made as the chef was finished. A nice touch considering it was past midnight and the kind a thing that guarantees we will return.

Location

Ideal for everything from shopping, bars and restaurants. If you go out the rear exit via the car park there is a traditional English pub that sells good beer at good prices and stayed open until the pub empties.

Car park

It is tight but we managed to park easy enough.

All in all this is a hotel with character and well aged with helpful staff in a good location.

Thank you for your review, I am happy to hear you enjoyed all of our facilities and you had an enjoyable stay with us. I’m glad that you found the service for the hotel up to your standards, it’s rare that I get a complaint about staff and I am very pleased on this occasion that we have kept to those standard and your service throughout the hotel was thorough. We look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel in the future.

On arrival the postcode on laterooms takes you to the wrong address, sort it out please, I had to ring the hotel which has two postcodes (yes it is quite large) and it took a further ten minutes of wrong turns to find the car park which is past the entrance to Marks and Spencers and is marked as a private road. The entrance is better hidden than the train platform to Hogwarts, (for Muggles that means its invisible to those who don't know where it is). Beware of potholes in the car park and hidden glass structure in the poorly lit car park, I only avoided this due to rear parking sensors, others may not be so fortunate. The check in was quick and miserable which after a six hour drive was not encouraging. I was told breakfast was served until 10 am with a card which at the time of booking would allow me to obtain breakfast for £7.50 which I decided to go for and directions to my room and that was that. The room was small, in fact almost the same size as the bathroom. The room was absolutely freezing, and took ages to warm up. The puny TV had a remote which only allowed control of the channels by typing in the number, however due to the small size of the room it was not too much of a chore although irritating to take the one step to manually change channels / volume etc. The restaurant was uninviting and I ate out, the pool was closed for cleaning which is a pity as I was looking forward to using it which is the main reason I chose this hotel and paid a chunk extra. The next morning I slept late as the bed although made for Hobbits was very comfortable. However when I went for breakfast there was none as breakfast finished at 930 not 1000 as informed on check in. The whole hotel was tired and needs sprucing up and the cheerless staff did nothing to make one feel welcome. Hungry, but rested I checked out and told them I did not have breakfast as they had finished serving, I handed my card back and was informed that on this occasion they would refund, normally this would not happen. The whole experience was disappointing and did nothing to reflect the cost for the room. As a weekly visitor to Carlisle, I have yet to find a hotel which meets the minimum requirements I would expect, but this has been the most disappointing to date. Unable to use the pool so could not comment, did not use the fitness centre. No lift evident lots of stairs.

Room Tip: Choose a bigger room the smallest available was rubbish.

After reviewing the Peel Hotel website, we decided to book a room at the Crown and Mitre Hotel Carlisle. The car park is a little difficult to find and is poorly sign posted. The wait for a member of staff to open the gate felt like an age but was probably 4 or 5 minutes, still, not what you need after a 6 hour drive. The decor is very tired, was probably very grand in its day but desperately needs updating. The reception staff were curt and off hand, our room wasn't ready and after a 30 minute wait, they couldn't find a key so more time spent waiting! Our room was small, dingy and very hot. The bathroom can only be described as disgusting with dust balls and hair in the corners of the floor. The towels were thin and should have been renewed a long time ago. With gloss painted surfaces and a louvered door to complete the worse hotel bathroom we have ever experienced. The bar has very impressive wood panelling but thats about it, surly staff and over priced drinks.
We will definitely not be staying at the Crown and Mitre again, it is very expensive for a very poor standard of room. Considering other Hotels in the immediate vicinity, the Crown and Mitre management need to take a long hard look at the standard of accommodation and pricing.

Room Tip: Don't stay here

I loved my stay at the Crown & Mitre. The room was clean, the bed was comfy and I had one of the best night's sleep in ages. The breakfast is hearty and the staff friendly. We had our firm's Christmas party at the hotel function room, which was equally a great success. Overall I am very impressed with the Crown & Mitre.
