This was a Birthday Treat for my husband, and once again we were not disappointed. On a gorgeous sunny May evening we relaxed with pre-dinner drinks, admiring the peaceful scene of cows grazing in the nearby field - one could imagine that many years ago the view would have been of an extended parkland perhaps?
The meal we ordered was exactly as we had hoped - my starter of sliced Lamb Loin on a red cabbage and celariac remoulade with Wild Garlic leaves was very tasty, and my husband's dish of an unusual cheese salad was well executed. The only snag with this lovely starter (well, for me!) was the absolutely lovely Melba Toast, which is my downfall!! I just cannot resist Melba Toast, and this was particularly scrumptious, being brown toast and delicious! I therefore ate far too much toast, being tempted also to have a slice of lovely home-baked bread too !!
So by the time our Mains arrived, I already knew I have eaten a bit too much ... however, I am a "try-er" and I therefore almost demolished the whole of my simply lovely (huge!) perfectly cooked Fillet Steak. But felt ashamed that I had to leave some of the chips !!
Ian had an interesting Pork dish, and managed to polish it off totally - but that left him with no room for a Pudding ....... however, despite knowing that I really ought not to (!) I chose a Layered meringue and chocolate dessert, simply because it was covered with lovely roasted Hazlenuts. Very good indeed.
The wine was an Australian Shiraz/Viognier and very palatable - no room for coffee though! The portion sizes are very generous at Crosby Lodge !!
We now consider this to be the only place we will visit for any special occasion meal - Carlisle is not blessed with many really good restaurants, and Crosby Lodge suits us down to the ground - we are very picky people, and have eaten out in France for many years, having lived there until a couple of years ago - in our opinion, this is as good as it gets, and I am very surprised (having read other reviews) that there are any negative comments on TripAdvisor ... some people just don't know a good thing when they see it !!
