“A "children's" provincial museum - but it is about to be refurbished”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2012

This is in the largest Norman castle in Europe - bigger even than the Tower of London. It is built on the site of a Roman temple to Claudius which was besieged by Boedica. Yet the exhibits are laughable and boring and there is no sense of the building's extraordinary history.
The museum will be closed in 2013 for repairs and a total refurbishment and rethink of the museum exhibits. I just hope they get it right this time.

“Interesting and enjoyable”

Visited the castle and gardens at Easter. In a nice setting close to the town centre. The museum is really interesting.

“Hurry up -- it closes for modernisation on January 7”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2012

The astonishing history of Colchester has been preserved for the public since 1860 in this solid castle. Everything, from the cremated remains of ancient kings to the most beautiful jewellery of the art deco period has been displayed in a manner which is now considered outdated. That;'s why the Castle is closing for many months from January 7 to be completely repaired and regenerated. In my hometown of Belfast, the much-loved Ulster Museum was closed for two or three years and I moaned along with everyone else. However on the reopening, it was a triumph and the place is always packed in the bright new display areas and its rtwo eateries! Good luck to Colchester!

“Doing what a local musem should do - well.”

The variety of displays and explanations was excellent, and the use of space imaginative. Connecting with history done well.

“Don't visit if you're expecting to see a castle...”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed December 3, 2012

Just stay outside to see the castle...very little of the castle on view inside...just a second-rate museum.
