Owner description: Colchester's distinctive heritage is nowhere more apparent than in Castle Park. A site of national importance, this Victorian Park contains evidence of 2000 years of history and is a landscape moulded by the people of Colchester over many eras.Castle Park not only encompasses much of Colchester's rich heritage within its boundaries but is much loved and used as a part of present day life. It boasts over 1 million visitors a year. Providing a green oasis in the town centre, you can sit, walk, enjoy music, play games, or picnic amongst wonderful flowers and trees. Its horticulture is award-winning and the park has long been a superb venue for the town's big events. The park itself is designated Grade II on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England.

Having only lived in Colchester for a couple of years, it was only recently that we took the time to explore the park, we both agreed that the park is very well maintained and looked after and on a summers day we walked along the river footpath and thought it was really beautiful.
There is also a great children's play area and a small boating lake, there are also lots of events throughout the year which we are looking forward to seeing.

“Wonderful town Oasis!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2013

I live near Castle Park and walk through it at least once daily. It is a beautifully maintained space with tree-shaded walkways and well kept flower/shrub borders. The gardeners work very hard all year round to maintain standards and the Park has won the coveted Green Flag award several years running. There is a newish play area for young and slightly older children; this is very popular indeed in the fine weather. There is an Victorian bandstand with free concerts on Summer Sunday afternoons. The boating lake is very popular as well in the warm months; and the River Colne which runs through the park is home to wildlife and birds. //Colchester Castle is currently undergoing renovation and has a long history. //The Park is home to cricket in the summer and several groups of keep fit enthusiasts work out in the lower park on light evenings. //Park Rangers keep a professional watchful eye on events and are always there to help out.//The town is most fortunate to have such a beautiful open space for recreation and visitors will find much to do and enjoy within it.//There is a supportive group of Castle Park Friends of which I am one.

“great fun for the kids”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2013

I often take my grandchildren there if they are with me when I visit Colchester. They have a great time in the childrens play area and in the summer months you can use the boating lake. They also have activities for children during the six weeks holiday. Alternatively you can relax around the fish pond and watch the worl go by. A very relaxing day.

“Brilliant Tree Trail...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2013

A very well laid out park with lots of space and interest for everyone from excellent kid's play areas to the planting and a great collection of trees. The local tourist office has copies but they are available free on line on the Colchester website, and the Friends of Castle Park website as well - of a brilliant Tree Trail that highlights some of the usual and the unusual trees in the park. Cup of tea in the park cafe or take a picnic - it's a really excellent half-day

“A lovely park, full of suprises”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 21, 2013

This is a lovely pakl, with the Castle in it, an authentic roman wall, and the river Colne. It undulates and has unexpected places and bits - a perfect place to come on a nice day.
