Owner description: Colchester Zoo is constantly developing and has won many awards for its work. With over 270 species to see, set in 60 acres of beautiful parkland and lakes, Colchester Zoo is well worth a visit. As you walk around the zoo there's plenty of play areas to try out including the brand new indoor soft play area Jungle Tumble with a section for under 3s and all new play equipment where the kids can release their wild side! New enclosures for 2014 include 'Bears of the Rising Sun', a state of the art enclosure which houses two beautiful sun bears , Jo Jo and Srey Ya and 'Australian Rainbows', a new tropical walkthrough which houses a large group of lorikeets offering visitors a chance to feed them a treat of nectar. You can also come face to face with Komodo Dragons, see white rhino, giraffes, ostrich and kudu roaming together at Kingdom of the Wild and walk underwater through the 24m tunnel at the Playa Patagonia sealion pool. Learn more about the animals and see them up close by watching one of the 50 daily displays. You even get the fantastic opportunity to feed the elephants and giraffes yourself and take a ride on the 'Lost Madagascar Express' road train! Don't forget to pop into the discovery centre and have a go at handling some unusual bugs or get your face painted and transform yourself into your favourite animal!

4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2013

I use a motability scooter and find that I can access most areas of the zoo. The zoo is built on quite a steep hillside so there are some areas which are too difficult and people using a manual wheelchair would need a very strong pusher, although there is a clearly marked wheelchair route. I have a platinum card which is really good value and means that I can pop into the zoo for a couple of hours at a time which is much less tiring for me. Huge improvements have been made over the last few years and the animal enclosures are now much better. The staff are usually very helpful and the animal feed talks are always informative. I would highly recommend this for anyone but particularly anyone who wants to keep children entertained and interested for the day.

“Excellent day out”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2013

Really great Zoo, well organised, small enough to do most things in a day, large enough to want to visit again. Very child friendly, if you are fairly local and have small children or grandchildren, Gold Cards are a must, excellent value for money.

“My Favourite Day Out”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2013

I have been a Gold Card holder at the zoo since 2000 - and still love visiting no matter what the weather. My children (who are 13 and 11) still consider going to the zoo a treat (despite visiting several times every year their whole lives) and have grown very fond of many of the animals. Although it is impossible to see everything in one visit, the children always insist on seeing Rajang the orang-utan - just so that they can show him their tummy buttons and watch his reaction. I have been a "Keeper for the Day" which was a fantastic experience and took part in aardvark and orang-utan Keeper Shadowing which were both great fun. The aardvarks behaved like big dogs and I will never forget the baby rolling onto his back so that I could rub his tummy. There are lots of play areas, animal shows, train rides and plenty of restaurants. At Christmas, the staff put on a short panto and my children (and my elderly parents) always look forward to it. It's not "The Mercury" but we always come away smiling.
I know that some people are passionately opposed to zoos but the animals at Colchester Zoo never look bored, don't pace their enclosures and seem very happy with their lot in life. I think the wonderful and dedicated keepers make all the difference to these animals and I only wish that I had the time to go there more often. A wonderful day out.

“Never again”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2013

I hate seeing wild animals in captivity. I was particularly upset by seeing the wolves in a small enclosure and looking catatonic.
