This could be such a gem of a B&B, but sadly it's just tired and lacklustre. It is located centrally in Colchester which is its one redeeming feature and it does have secure parking, although the shutters don't go up till 9am, so don't bank on an early start! The room I stayed in was a twin; very basic furnishings, brew kit, TV etc, could definitely do with a thorough spring clean and redecoration programme. And it was sooooo cold! So cold in fact, that milk stayed fresh for 2 days on the windowsill (inside the room!) The corridors outside the rooms however were roasting - I seriously considered camping out on the landing! Breakfast was quite dire - cheap ingredients and served in a tired run-down dining-room.
Customer service was almost non-existent. My mother arrived at 9.10am (having flown in from Germany on the 6am flight) and although allowed to put her luggage in safe room, when she asked if she might have a pot of tea, she was told no because breakfast had finished at 9am. Helpfully she was directed to a very unprepossessing greasy spoon up the street (yes, my tongue is firmly in my cheek!) The following morning when she came for breakfast, the waitress asked her where she'd like to sit and when she indicated several likely tables, she was told other guests might want to sit there - why on earth ask her for her preference then? Surely just tell guests where to sit and be done with it!
This is a fabulous building, it has so much potential, but sadly it seems to be a cheap businessmans and builders stop-over. If I were to stay in Colchester again, I suspect I'd stay in the Premier Inn just outside the town and taxi into the centre.
