Owner description: Set in a peaceful and picturesque wooded valley, Roche Abbey was founded in 1147, with stonework dating back to around the 1180's. Thanks to Capability Brown who landscaped the area in the 18th Century, we now boast the most complete foundations of any Cistercian monestary in the country. Although most of the excavated ruins are low lying, the transcepts still stand to their original height. Roche Abbey is closed during the winter months, re opening again March 2015. The woodland walks around the area are accessible and parking is still available.

“A South Yorkshire Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2012

The beautiful, Capability Brown landscaped site of Roche Abbey is set in a wooded valley bordered by a fast flowing stream. The abbey is well maintained and would make an excellent place to have a picnic. Turn sharp left at the bottom of a cobbled road on approaching the abbey and be prepared to view this gem that I will definitely visit again.

“A great afternoon!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2012 via mobile

What a great surprise! Expected a small, neglected pile of stones - Instead I found a well-maintained site, extremely interesting for us grown ups and great for the kids to run around. Definitely be going back again - weather permitting!

We love a few hours exploring at Roche Abbey and a picnic, walk and game of football. There are usually a couple of horses. Just love the peace, quiet and history.

“Little Gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2012

Hidden away in this picturesque valley near the village of Maltby, lies Roche Abbey, now managed by English Heritage. This area is slightly off the normal tourist routes but one that’s worth a detour. It’s not terribly well sign posted so keep your eyes open and do not turn back once you start to descend down the single track cobbled road.
Upon the instructions of the Earl of Scarborough, Capability Brown landscaped the area covering the ruins. Now partially excavated this has proved to preserve the foundations leaving some intricate details on tomb stones and giving a fascinating glimpse into the history of this site. The diverted stream makes an interesting feature. Don’t forget to look closely at the 19th century graffiti in the old hunting lodge. How fantastic would it be if the adjacent land could be further excavated!
It’s a wonderful place on a sunny day to enjoy a peaceful and secluded picnic adjacent to the stream. The site staff couldn’t be more friendly and accommodating and would love to see more people enjoying the site they care passionately about. So take the advice we were given and take time out to visit this little gem.
