“Good location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2013

My friend and I are both seniors and were looking for a hotel in Stamford for 1 night. Our first impressions were not too good as there was nobody at the reception desk. However, our room was large and had a great view, but was up 3 floors and there wasn't an elevator. The staff took our luggage up for us and we could manage the stairs. The hotel has a good location in the center of a very attractive town. There is a parking lot which also is a plus. We had both dinner and breakfast at the hotel. Service was slow and somewhat disorganized but our food was good.

We stayed at the Crown this weekend as part of a large group. We had a group dinner on Friday night and although the service from the staff in the restaurant was good, the food was pretty average.

Unfortunately the accommodation that night was shambolic. We were staying in a house across the street rather than in the main hotel, which was less than convenient to start with, but the room although on the small size was clean and apparently well equipped, despite several non working lightbulbs. Unfortunately, after a long day I wanted to go to bed an hour before my partner at which point it became apparent that because we only had one key and the door only locked on a mortice lock, my partner had the options of either locking me in the room or leaving me to sleep in an open room in an unstaffed building.

All of the bedding was down/feather stuffed, and to be fair to the hotel we had not told them that this would be an issue, but in the middle of the night I had a massive asthma attack caused by an allergic reaction to the bedding. We were unable to call reception about this because the phone in the room wasn't working, so my partner had to walk in the rain over to the main hotel. The night porter was appallingly rude to him when explained what the issue was and reluctantly provided us with a synthetic duvet, but couldn't provide us with any pillows so we had to go without.

The next day the hotel were terribly apologetic; they fixed the lights, provided an extra set of keys, replaced all the bedding, replaced the leaking iron but couldn't fix the telephone.
They did provide us with a written apology for their staff's behaviour along with a bottle of wine and some chocolates and they deducted the cost of the night's stay from the bill.

All of the hotel manager's actions the next day were very gratefully received, but unfortunately did not make up for a very stressful night and broken sleep before an important event the next day.

Used to go here a lot for meals because it was good food etc, but found on 2 recent visits with family that food portions have reduced staff indifferent, and was charged for items not received both times, won't be going again soon.

I was actually put across the road in a house, which felt very odd and, as it is via a back gate and pathway, I would not be impressed if I thought my wife had been put there, even if it is Stamford.

Wifi not working, asked them to fixit but they didn't. Was only there 12 hours so not worth making a fuss but definitely not as good as the William Cecil, was just odd being 30 yards away in a house.

Room was minuscule, as in London standard sized, you would not want two people in there

We booked this hotel at the last minute on a recommendation. We were not disappointed. On arrival, Sunday evening, after a long journey, we asked for a glass of water and were given a nice chilled bottle. The staff were extremely pleasant and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. We were in room 15 which was nicely decorated with a wet room. Unfortunately we left the window open at night and were woken by the refuse collection in the morning at 7. We enjoyed a relaxing evening meal with family who we met for the evening. The food was expensive but then it was hotel prices. Breakfast was a selection of fruit, yogurts and cereal also, full English and toast, which set us up for the day. We would recommend this hotel, and have no hesitation in booking it again.

We often visit The Crown for coffee on market day and sometimes have lunch. The staff are always friendly and the service good. This place looks out onto All Saints church and also has a courtyard with Pimms bar. Good choice of food including a pick and mix: the Lincolnshire sausages with mustard mayo are gorgeous. Best to book on fridays and at weekend.

Stayed here with the kids. Lovely room with an enormous bath, and comfy bed. The staff were very friendly and helpful and we ate off the pick n mix Sunday menu in the lovely sunny courtyard out the back.
The hotel's in a perfect position, really central, yet quiet. Easy to explore the wonders of a previously undiscovered gem of a historic town.
Will definitely come back
