“Historic hotel in surprising location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 29, 2013

You wouldn't expect this hotel to be in such a modern area but obviously the area was built all around it. Staff great, rooms nice. Issues: Driveway is in very poor shape and your car can easily ground on the potholes and speed bumps. The drinks prices are very steep (£8 for a 175ml glass of house wine). Parking can be an issue. Try to avoid weekends as there will be a wedding going on. The public areas are very small and you will 'enjoy' the wedding whether you want to or not. Being surrounded by loud drunk people may not be your idea of a romantic weekend. This hotel is very close to the NEC, we used it as a base to visit the Motorcycle show. Breakfast is cooked to order but we got a lady who couldn't speak or understand English very well and my smoked salmon and scrambled eggs (a standard menu item) arrived with the salmon missing. It too ages for it to arrive as a side item which spoiled the meal as the eggs were now cold.

Room Tip: Ask for an upgrade, you may be lucky if they have availability

We had a very good experience of this place. We got a great half term deal including dinner which was great value. We arrived horribly late after getting stuck in traffic. The receptionist offered to hold our table in the restaurant so we could have half an hour to recoup. As part of the deal we had a three course meal and we thought the quality and presentation of this was very good, especially as were coming to the end of service. We also opted for breakfast in bed the next morning, for a very modest sucharge and this was served with style and grace. The hotel itself is lovely and set in nice grounds with a moat. We didn't get chance to use the spa facilities. We had no difficulty parking although we were probably one of last guests to arrive. Our room was one of their classic rooms and it was good size. The only thing we thought was perhaps they could have done with more tiling in the bathroom .We would definitely stay with this chain of hotels again as we felt the service was very good without being intrusive. Its a nice touch when they take your bags to the car

My cousin was married at the hotel and the reception has held here. The whole event was fantastic. The staff attended to all the guests without being in the way.Wedding ceremony was beautiful as the hotel stands in the most stunning location. The food was great and service first class. We stayed overnight in a lovely room.Breakfast was great.Well worth a trip even if not at a wedding. If you need a wedding venue look no further. As we went to breakfast we bumped into the Arsenal Manager and team who had stayed over night before their West Brom game

Part of the Hand Picked hotels group, the building is really impressive with lots of history however I personally think this is what you are being charged for.
The food and service was excellent; however my room was not worth £125 per night. It was a joined room and consequently quite noisy until the neighbours settled down it was also opposite the staff entrances and was again noisy as staff were up and about in the morning.
The room and bathroom were also quite small for the rate being charged.

LOCATION: a short tax ride from Sutton Coldfield station (£5 by taxi)
DECOR/STANDARD OF ACCOMMODATION: Pleasant surroundings, beautiful historic building, lovely grounds for a stroll. Comfortable beds (twin room), good in room facilities (tea/coffee/minibar/robes/tv/hairdryer etc). Comfortable beds. Good shower pressure. The room was very warm, particularly at night.
SERVICE/STAFF: Arrived at the same time a wedding was taking place. Check in efficient and staff very helpful and friendly. Went to a lounge wanting a quick lunch before our first spa treatment. Had to wait too long for service and eventually went to find a waitress. Waited too long for sandwiches (think the staff confused us with other guests who had pre-ordered their lunch). After this bumpy start the only way was up! Service from this point on was excellent. All staff responsive, happy, friendly and helpful.
RESTAURANT/FOOD: Excellent quality of food (sandwiches at lunch/3 course dinner in the evening) and again, very friendly and helpful staff.
SPA: Fantastic Spa facilities (small but perfectly formed!). Staff friendly and helpful, treatments great (full body massage, manicure, pedicure). Pool and Jacuzzi temperature lovely and warm.

Would have been 5 stars if it hadn't been for the wait for the initial lunch service and the room being too warm.

Overall VERY friendly and helpful staff, lovely overall experience. My friend and I definitely plan to visit again.

The grounds include a moat and a lake, which together with the architecture of the older part of the building provide a perfect backdrop for luxury and relaxation whatever the weather.
The accommodation is excellent, whether staying in the older part of the building which is unique and full of character or the newer part which is spacious and extremely comfortable.
The spa and fitness centre provides all that is needed. The food and service in both restaurants is of a high standard.
All of the staff knowledgeable, well-trained, polite, always ready to help and enjoy their work!
I wish I could afford to live there!

Stayed with a family of 5 split up in to 2 rooms. Guest services (Sam and Tony) were incredible! VERY friendly and prompt with great info on the local area, Birmingham, hotel services, etc. Rooms were spacious and clean. Breakfast quality was really nice. The breakfast manager had his hands full keeping a young and inexperienced staff in line, but with several corrections did a fine job keeping things running smoothly. The grounds are really unique. This is an old building, but they have done a really nice job keeping the quality of the in-room furnishing modern and functional. Good wifi in our rooms. Mattresses and linens provide very good support and a clean/fresh feeling - GREAT sleep had by all. Only 1 drawback we noticed...the prices for room service (food and especially beverages) are about 30-50% over what you see elsewhere for the same items. This is based on some of our other stays in Edinburgh, Fort William, Ireland, Germany, US, etc. Still, we will be back to spend more time (spa, massage, etc.) :)

Room Tip: Family rooms available. Appear to be family friendly.
