“Vomit. Salty vomit.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2013 via mobile

I've been to a few good Chinese buffets in my time, and I was looking forward to eating at The Chinese Buffet in the centre of Wakefield, something the town is lacking. However alarm bells started ringing (not literally as happened to one reviewer!) from the minute I walked through the door. Duct-taped torn carpet in the waiting area, dirty smashed up lift by the entrance, the grimy toilets, broken LED fountain display, (in a building thats probably only 2 years old remember) insolent/suicidal looking staff, bits of food on the floor in the dining area, the list goes on. It's clear the joint is probably being run on a shoe-string, including staff wages.

Food was below average, most of the sauce based dishes were salty as hell, while the fried offerings and spare ribs etc were lukewarm and dried up. Same goes for the soup which was salty and lukewarm. Found some pieces of dried up concrete pizza and some good old chips for the kids to chew on. Ice cream in the dessert section was of course way too sugary, and the little cakes I saw people piling on their plates 5-6 at a time - for the life of me i don't know why, either had a strange taste or pretty much no taste. Seaweed was nice, but then again you can't really go wrong there.

The fresh food preparation area was deserted except for one token Chinese man taking fifteen minutes to chop a cucumber. Based on the excellent reviews for here, I'm guessing people don't know good or bad food when they taste it. Just because its an all you can eat buffet where you can fill your boots and go back for ten plates until you burst doesn't make it good. Avoid and head to Glasshoughton for one of 3 buffets which each make this place seem like Nora Battys' Cafe in comparison.

“Best Chinese Buffet !”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2013

We have tried a number of Chinese buffets over the years and generally they are acceptable as long as you want Value for Money and are not wanting a "dining experience"
This restaurant is trying to change your opinion as our whole experience was excellent.
Sometimes buffets can be a little messy woth food scattered over the eating areas and around where you go to get your food however this restaurant was very different with high standards and plenty of staff tidying up.
The seating was comfortable and the service when we wanted drinks polite and friendly.
There was a very large range of food available and this was topped up constantly and was fresh and not dry like some buffets can be.
There is also a chef to cook you fresh food such as pork, steak and prawns etc on a hot plate.
We went on a Saturday night and it was £13.95 which was very good value for the standard of the food especially the crispy Duck.
There is a wide range of desserts and you were never hurried and the atmosphere was very pleasant.
They close at 10 to avoid any rowdy customers and this was a welcome addition to the Wakefield restaurant scene.

“Good value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2013

Went with a large group and was pleasantly surprised. Not a fan of Chinese but rest of party were. Best thing about the buffet was that I was able to test small amounts before taking proper portion. Food tasted fresh and at right temperature. Good, wide choice of dishes for all tastes. Super sweets. Friendly and helpful staff.Big well appointed room with plenty of natural light and room to walk about to the buffet.

We arrived at 9 pm and were told buffet closed at 10 which was fine but the food was all dried out we couldn't bite into the duck for fear of breaking our teeth . A waitress asked if it was ok and we mentioned the duck she offered to have some more cooked we declined . Worst to come was the main courses not much food left, no chef cooking on the griddle , and everything was past its best and dried out . Same with desserts !
We went to pay and told the young lad on the till and he said well we offered to cook more duck for you, we said that wasn't the point all the food was dried out and not good . he just glared at us , no apology , he just stared and was quite intimidating .
How rude !
Will never go again had stomach ache all night too

“Hit & Miss”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2013

A mixed review, due to the fact we were there for an evening meal and the fire alarm went off...

Pros: A decent selection of food - it ranged from the more english style dishes to choices that were a bit more unusual, which was nice to see. The restaurant was quite big so it felt quite roomy and spacious, along with the large windows which gave it a lighter feel & nice views of the street below.

Cons: Unfortunately more cons than pros...Asked for a drink at the bar as some of our friends hadn't arrived, me and my partner were told that we had to wait quite a while because there was only one bartender serving the entire restaurant (we ended up being seated before we could even ask for a drink!). We were enjoying our meal, finishing our starters, and then the fire alarm went off. Everyone had to evacuate for a loooong time, in the rain. The staff were trying to "herd" people as they started to walk off. They were also taking photographs of the customers (a little disconcerting). We decided to wait it out as we didn't want to be rude and not pay something. We finally got back inside, went back to getting some food, and found out the hot grill was now not working. It did make me wonder whether that had been the source of the fire alarm, but we kept being told that it was Handmade Burgers fault. The service for drinks etc after this point became quite bad (I assume because the staff were a little confused about what to do). They were also watching us quite closely to see who had come back in etc, which made it a little uncomfortable to eat and relax. When it came to the bill, they gave us 10% off for the inconvenience (basically £1 pp or something silly!). The bartender who gave us the bill was extremely rude and unhelpful - he didn't seem to get that we'd been herded like sheep, kept in the rain for 40 minutes, and then half the stuff was off/lukewarm ...

All in all, probably a nice place to eat on a good day, the food was decent and the room was modern and spacious, but I probably won't be coming back here due to the relatively bad experience.
