“good hotel great value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2014

Stayed Saturday night in early April, much more than adequate. beds comfortable, good shower; all spotlessly clean; everything seemed professionally run. We didn't eat so can't comment on the food.....

We stayed for one night to break up a long trip. We booked in advance for around £40 ex breakfast which was great value for a clean, functional room, we were also able to have the last parking space in the hotels underground parking. This was lucky as we hadn't realised on booking that parking facilities at the hotel are pretty restrictive. Free wifi was also welcomed.

Not much can be said about this hotel, it is a mediocre city centre hotel.

Fine for one night, the room was modern and clean but the bed was lumpy and the sheets were horribly scratchy. On a plus side it had decent freeview TV and good free Wifi, just what you want when travelling alone.

My room (423) was irritatingly noisy due to the constant doran of what I can only assume was the kitchen extractor fan; it wasn't too noticeable until I'd turned the TV off ready to go to bed, otherwise I'd have asked to move. Certainly not conducive to a good nights sleep.

The odd room layout meant the only window was about 8ft above the floor; I had to stand on the desk to open it, given the noise though that probably wasn't a bad thing. Both the window and window ledge were covered with what looked like years of bird muck, truly disgusting!

The Mercure Darlington was our chosen venue to hold a Spring Ball in aid of charity. from the initial contact I cannot fault the help and support James and his team gave us. On the day itself the setting out of the ballroom was faultless and Jonathan was a great host on the evening. Our chosen menu was delicious, served quickly and efficiently to 120 guests. Many thanks to everyone involved.

Thank you for such great feedback . I am delighted the evening was such a success. The tables were decorated beautifully . You have put such a tremendous effort into the event and very moving for you. I hear you may plan another! Thank you and I hope you beat your fundraising target.

Hi James,

Did try to find a feedback area on your website, but could not see anything.

Am just writing to say thank you to you and your team for ensuring that all want so smoothly at our wedding reception.

Special thanks to Rob and Charles, who were particularly great.
Meal
and buffet were really good - we had a couple of particularly fussy
/picky eater who praised the food - thank you to all your chefs and
waiting staff!

There was nothing throughout the day that I would want
to change to make it any better. Everyone who was there said how much
they enjoyed it. Still getting 'great day, lovely reception' messages
even now.

The bridal room was very comfortable, and every one else who
stayed over said they were relaxed I. Their rooms too!

Thank you for
the recommendations you made in respect of disco and table decorations.

We would heartily recommend your hotel and rooms for any reception -
really did have a fantastic time.

Thank you all so much for making
such a lovely and memorable day for us.

Kind regards and thanks you to
all your team

Allison and Bob Gorman

Stayed here for one night as husband had a meeting, ate out in the square in the evening, back to the hotel for a few drinks. Nice shopping centre right outside of the hotel. It was a long drive for us but worth it as the hotel was great

Room Tip: Close to pubs, cafés and restaurants for the evening and turn right out of the main entrance to the...

Second review of this hotel, as I was here a year ago. This time my stay was shorter and I'm glad.
I asked for an upgraded room - normally 30GBP extra but I negotiated them to 20GBP/nt for two nights. The privelege room (365 in the main building) was very bizzarre. It was much larger than the standard rooms, but all the extra room was wasted as there was no furniture. THere was absolutely zero place to put clothes except in your suitecase on a stand, or hang a few items in small closet. No dresser, no table (except tiny work desk), no shelves, nothing but a large extra space fit for dancing with your partner in the two supplied robes.
SPeaking of dancing, the lighting of this room was bizzarre, as there was red led rope lighting concealed all around the trim of the ceiling and the bathroom, controlled by a separate switch - quite the honeymoon suite effect, but strange.
As far as upgraded amenities the only thing i noticed was a Nespresso single cup coffee machine with three provided capsules. Although I had to ring the front desk for a refill the second night - which they cheerfully brought up along with two water bottles for my fridge...

Breakfast continued to be excellent. And no noise midweek except the 24 hr tolling of the church bells.
I would continue to recommend this hotel for location and great service, but do not spend any extra dough on an upgraded room...

Room Tip: privelege room 365, no view, large but without furniture to place clothes away.

Thank you for reviewing your recent stay. I am disappointed that the privilege upgrade did not meet your expectations , all supplies should be replenished daily and there is no limit to this. There are other upgrade rooms available and I am sorry you did not like the style or feel there was sufficient storage for clothes within the room. I am pleased you enjoyed your breakfast again. We look forward to welcoming you back again soon.
