“Tired and dilapidated”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 weeks ago

We spent a weekend in this tired and dreary hotel in Stevenage. It is quite a shame because the location is excellent (right on the fringe of the old town) and the staff are genuinely lovely, hard working and doing their best under difficult conditions.
The hotel has been neglected, most probably for a decade, or more. Public rooms are tired, with furniture which is threadbare and well past due date for replacement.
Bedrooms vary ... the first one we were allocated was tiny, dingy and rejected. The alternative was more acceptable, though the carpet was a tad grimey. The bed, though, was very comfortable.
There is no wifi.
Don't rush here. There is better quality available.

My husband and I stayed here for the weekend and had a lovely time. Staff were very helpful, breakfast was very tasty and we can't wait to return again. Good car parking and not far to walk into the newer part of Stevenage. Room was very clean, large and bed very comfortable.

There was no one on reception upon our arrival and we ended up having to walk around looking for staff after waiting for over 5 minutes. We found the room to be a little on the small side and dark. It was clean though. The bed was ok but the mattress was a little too soft (but thats just my personal taste).

I stayed at this hotel on a recent business trip to Stevenage. I was very pleased with the room and the queen size bed also very clean and tidy. Good breakfast in the morning and the only downside is the bar area which is very tired and the furniture is a little thread bear

Upon arrival at the hotel we had to be moved rooms, as our room had a very strong smell of mold in the room. The new room had pubic hair in the sink and around the toilet, and clear damp and mold on the walls. The worst part of this hotel though was the service. The late night bar at the hotel. After cowing home from a party, I arrived at the bar with my grandmother and grandfather, and was told by the clearly very lazy, and very nasty man at the bar, that if my grandparents made any trouble we would all be kicked out of the bar. This was because my grandfather had left a door open coming into the hotel. Rude, dirty, and bad smelling, and that's just the staff. If your thinking of booking here don't, it's terrible.

Last weekend we held my Grandmothers 90th Surprise Birthday party for 36 people.
We all had a 3 course set meal. Everything was fantastic, the way the room was set up, the food was great all served hot. I dropped of decorations in the morning which was all set up for me.
The house wine both white and red was superb and the staff couldnt do enough for us, checking everything was ok. Really pleased with the venue and everything and would defo use them again! Top Marks The Cromwell!

Went to a function and must admit only passed thru the reception, to the bar area and into a hall.
At the interval we bought a drink and sat in the bar area, and we were horrified at the state of the "comfy" chairs, the arms were thread bare with the foam showing, god knows how old they were but not fit for house room, you couldn't even give them to a charity, straight to the dump I'm afraid.
No doubt if the hotel respond to this they will say they are being replaced or on order or there part of the hotels character etc...or some lame excuse. No I'm sorry they should have been replaced years ago ! Also, while in the hall the bar and kitchen staff/area were noisy, so made it difficult to pay attention to someone speaking, who did ask them to quiten down. Cannot judge the hotel any further so I will leave it there.
