“Gloopy, fatty, bland, unrepresentitive of Thai cuisine”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2013 via mobile

Ate here with family on a visit to East Anglia, though we were not locals, so went on reviews.

Having eaten Thai food in the past and having an excellent local Thai restaurant to compare this to, I have to say that this version of Thai cuisine was way below par.

Opting for the vegetarian banquet for 3, barring the green curry which was of expected Thai standard, every dish was coated in what I could only describe as gloopy grease. There were some decent flavours lurking below the layers of fat, but the overriding taste was grease and more grease. If I wanted a grease fest I would have visited a cheap Chinese chippy.

Overall, this was overpriced for the quality of food on offer, at least from a vegetarian point of view. The meat eaters in our party had no complaints and the service was good. Just a pity the food had to be so laden in grease.

“Meh”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2013

So so. Fairly pricey. Food ok. Weeping tiger excellent, everything else slightly disappointed.

Thai beer was nice, but won't rush back.... Even if work is paying again.

“Really good Thai fayre....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2013

Food is excellent - either we were just lucky or some of the reviewers on here are deluded. Service was OK, and price is reasonable.
Would have been a 5* rating but the interior does let it down a bit - very tired and dated. With a relatively modest facelift, this place would be the talk of the area.

“More like Chinese”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2013 via mobile

Visited on Saturday 29th June. Good service. But we chose the set menu for 2. There was plenty to eat. Well cooked and very well presented, but the food to me resembled chinese. So a bit dissapointing. The decor is also very tired.staff really nice, but bad english .

“We all left very happy....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2013

5 people, ages 24 – 61, visited the Kwan Thai Restaurant in Ipswich, 7pm, 15th June 2013. The meal was very much appreciated by all. As my first complete Thai meal, I found it an enjoyable experience in a busy restaurant situated in a popular eating area of Ipswich. It was a little gloomy and the décor a trifle garish, but this may have been a traditional Thai design for all I know, as the total experience of Thailand is in passing through the airport in Bangkok! But it was clean and the small toilets were well kept. We were met by enthusiastic and friendly waiting staff, who were obviously experienced and skilled in their work. This made the service flow quickly and efficiently during a completely full service. If you are looking for “fine dining”, this is not it – rather, it is substantial, well-prepared, fresh food served in a quick, professional way, and if this is what you are after as part of a night out or a filling lunch, you cannot go wrong. We had a fixed menu for 4, plus another starter and two additional mains. The quality of the food was superb, with the Weeping Tiger dish a revelation. Sliced lightly-fried steak in a wine / black-bean type of sauce – wonderful! The Ew dish was lovely, and the Green Thai Curry subtle and tasty. The Sweet and Sour Chicken was a bit “standard-Chinese” (but of good amount and flavour), whereas a Chilli Pork dish was the only slight disappointment, with a bit of overkill on the chilli sauce (but other diners may have liked it’s strength). The Prawn dish was great too. People with nut allergies should be careful in their choices, as one dish contained cashew nuts – but I’m sure the waiters would help out if you enquire. This was all preceded by an array of starters which were tasty as well as a visual treat. All the food was well-presented with elaborate vegetable dish-decorations, although some of the pottery serving dishes were a bit chipped in places. Whatever! The Thai house red wine was excellent (a bit like a Merlot) and the Thai beer – well, beer-like! With two coffees, the bill came to under £25 per head, which we all thought was a fair price. I would definitely return to this restaurant, and can recommend it for what it is – straightforward, with well-made and authentic Thai food, well-presented and for a reasonable price.
