We stayed for 3 nights for our Bonfire Night wedding anniversary, 2 nights at the bargain £99 DB&B rate and added a 3rd night for the standard £85 B&B.
We had sat nav which made it easy to find, but it’s very tucked away so bot the easiest place to get to but there’s plenty of signage approaching from several directions which is very helpful. Ample parking on arrival and friendly and helpful staff for an efficient check in.
We were in a lovely double room on the 2nd floor, last room on the left before the rear stairs (522?). It was a lovely surprise to find an anniversary card and box of 2 Belgian truffles in the room. Quite a strange shaped room but it added to the character and looking at the fire escape plan it looked like one of the largest on that floor. An entrance with a desk area, separate toilet and sink then a bathroom with bath, overhead shower and sink. Plenty of room in the sleeping area, bed was a little uncomfortable but we’re used to a very firm mattress with anti-roll-together! A little tatty around the edges (ill fitting bath panel, few stains on carpet and headboard) but definitely more diamond than rough! Nice views of grounds and stream which I presume is Belstead Brook.
We had 2 lovely meals on the chef’s inclusive package and I upgraded (about £5 I think) to the a la carte duck dish on the first night. Amazing food with excellent service and brilliant staff. Good wine list and drink prices were more than reasonable in the restaurant and also the bar. Nice public areas for pre- or post-dinner drinks. Again a little faded glory but it doesn’t spoil the experience.
Breakfast was consistently good. We were allocated seating in the buffet area on the 2nd morning and it was uncomfortably hot and stuffy but we were moved immediately when we asked.
The pool and spa were fantastic, in great condition and the water and drinks machines by the pool were a welcome addition. Changing rooms very basic, a bit tatty and in need of an overhaul but they’re functional.
All in all, for the price bracket this is an amazing place to stay with excellent food, service and top notch staff. I would recommend it to anyone. Sure they could spend £1million on a renovation programme, but then I’m sure the tariff would be increased to recoup the investment - to be honest I’d rather pay their current offer prices and stick with the slightly tired fixtures and fittings.
