“Lovely stay, great value for money, brilliant staff and amazing food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2009

We stayed for 3 nights for our Bonfire Night wedding anniversary, 2 nights at the bargain £99 DB&B rate and added a 3rd night for the standard £85 B&B.

We had sat nav which made it easy to find, but it’s very tucked away so bot the easiest place to get to but there’s plenty of signage approaching from several directions which is very helpful. Ample parking on arrival and friendly and helpful staff for an efficient check in.

We were in a lovely double room on the 2nd floor, last room on the left before the rear stairs (522?). It was a lovely surprise to find an anniversary card and box of 2 Belgian truffles in the room. Quite a strange shaped room but it added to the character and looking at the fire escape plan it looked like one of the largest on that floor. An entrance with a desk area, separate toilet and sink then a bathroom with bath, overhead shower and sink. Plenty of room in the sleeping area, bed was a little uncomfortable but we’re used to a very firm mattress with anti-roll-together! A little tatty around the edges (ill fitting bath panel, few stains on carpet and headboard) but definitely more diamond than rough! Nice views of grounds and stream which I presume is Belstead Brook.

We had 2 lovely meals on the chef’s inclusive package and I upgraded (about £5 I think) to the a la carte duck dish on the first night. Amazing food with excellent service and brilliant staff. Good wine list and drink prices were more than reasonable in the restaurant and also the bar. Nice public areas for pre- or post-dinner drinks. Again a little faded glory but it doesn’t spoil the experience.

Breakfast was consistently good. We were allocated seating in the buffet area on the 2nd morning and it was uncomfortably hot and stuffy but we were moved immediately when we asked.

The pool and spa were fantastic, in great condition and the water and drinks machines by the pool were a welcome addition. Changing rooms very basic, a bit tatty and in need of an overhaul but they’re functional.

All in all, for the price bracket this is an amazing place to stay with excellent food, service and top notch staff. I would recommend it to anyone. Sure they could spend £1million on a renovation programme, but then I’m sure the tariff would be increased to recoup the investment - to be honest I’d rather pay their current offer prices and stick with the slightly tired fixtures and fittings.

Booked the hotel on the special £39 package but a mistake was made somewhere and upon arrival I only had a reservation for a Single rather than double. Paid another £50 for an upgrade to a SUITE with a king sized bed. Regrettably the bed was a regular double but thats all they have....the receptionist did not know the difference presumably. The Suite was 2 rooms, quite old fashioned but overall good value for the money. Breakfast was included and was a buffet with a fair choice.
The TV's in the suite (2) only shared one remote control and ONLY had a choice of the 5 basic channels which in 2009 is poor.
At £39 the hotel offers great value and even at the higher price we were happy.

Stayed here for one night whilst on business. A pleasure and would definitely return if need to be in the area again. Decor of the room was a bit tired as per other reviews, but at least it was very clean (and also a good size). Enjoyed the leisure facilities and the restaurant food was very good as were the staff. Not the easiest of places to find in the dark (I don’t have sat nav) but don’t let that put you off. Although I cannot imagine doing so because of the distance, I would happily stay there with my wife on a leisure break as well as on business.

We stayed a couple of nights - Oct 25 / 26. Check in quick and friendly. Rooms - comfy , a little too warm ,, but then Temp of 16oC in October is unusual ( We even had a drink on a picnic bench in the garden) . As it was our wedding anniversary I decided to surprise my wife with Breakfast in bed on the first morning - nice but basic (the breakfast that is , not the wife). I felt that a charge of £7.95 extra EACH for room service was a bit over the top , but a b&b rate of £55 made up for this - and its not something you do all the time. We were joined by some more family for a meal in the restaurant . The service was excellent and friendly. The meal itself was .. ok .. with odd kind of offerings for a country manor. Beer and wine prices were good for a hotel. On our second night we had a meal in a restaurant in Ipswich centre but found we should have stayed in our hotel because the food was nicer and more relaxing. There were a few families staying and the children were all well behaved. Our breakfast on the second morning was excellent , with lots of choices ( and no £15.90 extra to pay ) . We both enjoyed using the excellent pool in the leisure centre. Our stay was a pleasurable one and i would recommend it to anyone.

The hotel looks very inviting upon arrival with a lovely reception and staff, as were all the staff in the hotel, proffesional and polite. The bar and seemed exellent and very relaxing, good food and calm atmosphere. I used the gym, an average one with one of each CV machines and a few weights, I was a little dissapointed as it was advertised as a GYM for the public to use, I would have been upset if I was a fare paying GYM member compared to what else is on offer at other dedicated gyms. Having said all that it was an average hotel gym, the pool on the other hand was amazing, the best I have been in, with even a coffee machine so you can enjoy a drink whilst in the hot tub or lounging around.

The big problem for me for that everything seemed, and especially my room, very tired and i desperate need of a refurb. There is a damp old smell about the place, more so in the room. The carpet was tired and stained, the old single glazing doesnt keep the traffic noise out, the plaster was crumbleing in the corner, paper peeling off the walls, varnish on the wooden bath panel flaking in the 1980's style bathroom. The whole room just needs an update! I was woken during the night by my radiator sounding as if someone was digging up the road with a jackhammer!

In summery: excellent staff, everything possible had been done to make my stay pleasurable but......you can only do so much! needs a refurb!

stayed at the Belstead on a two night package for our anniversay on a BB+D basis. We had a double room in one of the bungalows away from the main house. Very clean and comfortable, only issue was the pillows, too soft. Dinner was excellent and service very good. They even sent us a card. Excellant value, would stay there again.

We stayed here whilst attending a wedding (at another venue). The room was clean and comfortable, and they had a few extras you don't usually get in the big chains - bottled water, biscuits, chocolates and hot chocolate along with the normal tea & coffee. Lovely touches.
Yes, the taps in the bathroom were a bit tarnished, but who cares? The water was hot and plentiful, and the shower had lots of power.
Breakfast was fine, a perfectly reasonable buffet. The coffee did fail to show up, but when we brought this to the attention of the room manager, she went and got us a pot herself with an apology. It's nice to get good service like that.
We did not have time to use the swimming pool, but it looked lovely and I wished we had been able to stay an extra day to enjoy the facilites and the area in general.
