“A hidden gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2012

If the Odeon decide a film is too clever for the masses, this is the place to find it. With two screens - this is the antidote to the multiplex experience. Small screens that feel like a large front room, this was a different type of film experience but totally enjoyable.

This is a great alternative to the big named venue, check out the listings and choose from a good selection.

“thank you”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2012

thank you Ipswich Film Theatre for bringing so many obscure and lesser known films to us that otherwise would be left out by the larger cinemas.

“What a wonderful asset to the town”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2011

The Ipswich Film Theatre operated for many years under the control of the local council, but for whatever reason it was losing money. They then got a small independent cinema chain to come in and operate it, which they did for a while, but then the recession hit and it closed its doors again.

Fortunately for Ipswich, a small group of dedicated local film enthusiasts got together and formed a non profit business which has re-opened it, and it is flourishing, to the extent that they have added Wednesday nights and a Saturday matinee to the original Thur-Sat nights.

If you fancy a change from the Hollywood Blockbuster pap then get yourself down there. At £6.50 it's a couple of quid less than the multiplex, and you get to sit with respectful cinema-goers who actually want to watch the film.

They mostly show films that you won't see at the multiplex, but they do also show some of the more critically acclaimed mainstream films a few weeks after they've gone on release, so if you've missed a big film, or prefer to watch it in peace, then do give IFT a go.
