“Disappointing return visit”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2014

It is now 4 years plus since we first stay at Osborne House, on reading my previous review to refresh my memory it hardly seems like the same place. Coincidentally we had the same room again, but it would appear that very little has been done to maintain it since that visit. Sad to say it was looking a jaded and in need of a little TLC. The bed although large was tired and well worn, with the dents left in the mattress there was very little chance of rolling together in the night! It feels that costs have been cut (which is understandable in the current climate) but this shouldn't be to the detriment of the paying guest.

We had lunch on arrival, not very inspiring (cheap paper place mat and napkins), we were checked in and shown to our room by the same person taking our food and drink order and bringing our meal (although have to say he was a very pleasant and helpful young man), there didn't seem to be anyone "in charge".

Service in general was impersonal (which is something that I feel the sister hotel The Empire have always been excellent at). We ate in the restaurant both evenings - beautiful surroundings but average food. Service was rushed - as soon as starter finished the main course arrived almost immediately, we had the feeling they were trying to rush us through so they could pack up early. Bringing me to the bar, by 9.30pm they were tidying up and we felt obliged to take a nightcap to bed so to get out of the way. I realise they do say the bar will close earlier than 10.30 on quite evenings, but I think a little respect for paying guests would go a long way.

Finally the "speedy" check-out offered just made the whole experience feel rather sleezy. I think it goes without saying we will not be returning again for some considerable time.

Went for the first time to this beautiful hotel for Sunday lunch with family as we had been recommended, as you walk in there is a lovely warm and welcoming atmosphere both fires were lite we sat in the bar before we went into the restaurant, the value of the Sunday lunch is excellent for what you get and you can tell that its all fresh and the best of quality there is a good choice too. The service was excellent. It will not be long before we go back again as we would like to try the afternoon tea and also the evening menu as there is wide variety of choice. Top class in every way.

We literally stumbled in to this,"little gem" on a bitterly cold night.....What a reception awaited us.
We were told to sit by a beautiful Victorian fire and our drinks were brought over to us by a warm and friendly member of staff who then went through the Menu and advised us on the meals available. Nice touch. We couldn't fault a thing. Fabulous. The Osborne House is a place you really must go to and experience. Trust me you will not be disappointed. Cant wait to return.

After calling to discuss dietry needs I was assured that they could cater, so booked.
On arrival staff didn't have a clue.

We were seated in the waiting area without being asked for our drink order.
No staff were in sight.

One starter was cold.

extra bread wasn't brought for the oysters.

The vegan starter had fish added to it as an extra from the kitchen.

We were asked if we were finished when clearly still eating.

We would have had better service in a drive thru McDonald's.

I have written to the manager but had no response.

I'd rate it a 0/10

Booked this hotel for a weekend away and only booked it for it's quirkiness as my wife loves that sort of thing. On arrival we were instructed to park round the back of the hotel, these car park spaces are very tight. The staff met us round the back and led us through to reception, check in went very smooth and the staff showed us to our room. There are no lifts as it states on their website. Like I said the rooms are quirky, wooden floors, high rise bed with a wooden step and the room was very large. The room was pretty clean, the bathroom had a bath and a shower which was a bit dirty above the cubicle and the bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was served direct to your room but it was only continental, but as the hotel is part of the Empire hotel we walked up to there both mornings to have a hot breakfast which was very nice. We only had one evening meal in the hotel and a three course meal for £22 was very good value as the food was fantastic. Only downfall was the selection of beer from the bar they only had one German beer which I have never heard of! All in all a lovely hotel!
