We booked this hotel for £120 for 2 nights for 2 people(£30 pppn) which included breakfast, and on arrival we were allocated a sea view room with a balcony, although this was not asked for. The 2 nights that we stayed were at the weekend, so the price was an absolute bargain.
The Grand Hotel was indeed very grand many years ago(we know, as we stayed there 40 years ago), but these days it's a bit run down. Occasionally you can still see the splendour of this once grand hotel, but the grand days are long gone.
As previously mentioned, this hotel was a bargain, and based on the price it was a good hotel. The buffet breakfast was excellent, the evening entertainment was O.K., and I enjoyed the daily bingo sessions, and the free and easy late evening entertainment with Stan on the organ in the upstairs bar.
The sea view room and balcony was fabulous, and it's worth paying a tenner extra per person to book one.
Some of the staff seemed a bit lazy. A few examples :- 1) Bar staff took empty glasses from an recently vacated table, but didn't wipe the table, and left bits of crisps and the empty packet on the table. 2) A guest had left chocolate wrapping paper and a bit of chocolate on a table in the quiet room. I passed the table several times during the day, yet the paper and bit of chocolate remained there. 3) At breakfast, when a single occupant of a double table had finished eating and left the restaurant, the cleaner just wiped the bit of table where the single occupant had eaten, although there were crumbs, spilled tea, and splashes of tomato on the other side of the table. Really, it was just the staff being a bit lazy.
Having said all that, we thorougly enjoyed our stay, and would definitely go back again(at the price).
The room we had was adequate, and the bed was comfortable. One of the curtains was hanging off the rails, so a little maintenance wouldn't have gone amiss, but that's the trouble with the Grand. It's got a bit of a "couldn't care less" attitude about it..... A shame really.

It is disappointing to hear negative comments about the staff but I can assure you that this has now been dealt with by the Heads of Department.
I think the comment 'couldn't care less attitude' is a bit harsh as most of my staff are very caring and go to great lengths to assist the guests, sometimes over and above what is expected of them.
But I do agree that keeping the tables clean and tidy is of the utmost importance and we look forward to a further visit.
