Having previously written an approving review of Asia Restaurant, I am especially disappointed to have to write another that should redress the balance:
The service was excellent and the prices were fine.
The food was good but perhaps not as good as I had experienced from previous visits. The chicken in particular seemed quite rubbery (cheap perhaps?). This was not something I had noticed before!
There has always been a strong smell of disinfectant / bleach in the stairwell before the entrance doors. I have always noticed this but had never been concerned about it as at least it demonstrates that cleaning takes place. However on this latest visit, the smell was so overwhelming that myself and others had to hold our breath on the way out in case we were sick from the pungent smell. This smell has been noticeable since I first visited (a long time ago) and I really think they need to sort out whatever the source of the problem is rather than using more and more chemicals as as solution.
On a contrary matter of hygiene, I found that someone had at some time recently been sick against the wall in the toilets. This wasn't 'fresh' and had been cleaned but not properly as it was still very evident. It must have been there for more than a day because it looked quite dried on. Nasty!
Finally, the thing that really got me concerned about overall standards was the state of the carpet leading out from the kitchen into the restaurant. I appreciate it gets a lot of traffic as the waiters come and go but it was filthy. Not just warn, but actually filthy dirty and appeared not to have been vacuumed for a while, let alone cleaned. It made me consider that if the carpet that is visible to customers can be that bad then what must the kitchen be like.
There was evidence of some improvement work happening, particularly decorating but my concern is that the management have let this restaurant slip to this low standard in the first place and perhaps feel this is acceptable. Unfortunately for them, I don't feel this is OK. No matter how good the service / food is, basic levels of cleanliness are essential.
I love curry but it’s such a struggle to find a good Indian restaurant in North Wales that I could yet find myself in the Asia again but only if a): friends can convince me that the issues have been sorted. b): I have had one too many beers.
