“Our experience was GOOD!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2013

We booked in at the Chatsworth on a whim. Had we checked the Trip Advisor reviews, we would have probably have left well alone BUT, on a bitterly cold, snow filled evening, the whole place had a cosy glow about it.

Receptionist Alex was welcoming and friendly, the bar looked inviting and and we got a very good rate for a double overlooking the sea.

Yes, the Hotel is, worn and jaded. The lift is literally out of another century and, bizarrely, didn't stop at the third floor (our floor) going up but did coming down!

However, the renovations (new carpets, double glazing, efficient shower etc) have ensured that it is warm and comfortable. We had an excellent night's sleep.

We had no problem with the breakfast - perfectly cooked to order. All the staff we met were polite and professional. The position of the hotel overlooking the sea, couldn't be better. It is also very near the town centre and a number of bars and excellent restaurants.

To .sum up, this is a 3 star hotel.. It's old and shows it. But the (limited) facilities and extremely affable staff were, for us, spot on. If you can get a good rate and a sea facing room and don't expect 5 star standards you shouldn't be disappointed.,

Room Tip: Sea facing room. a must..

We always attend my partners staff party at the Chatsworth! And I have to say this year I was most surprised by how much the standards gave improved! The hotel is looking more like it should as a jewel in Eastbourne's crown, good service (although some food was missing, this was quickly rectified). All good and clean. Only downer was the bar price, but you have to remember this is a hotel not a pub!

My parents had booked Christmas lunch at The Chatsworth and seeing previous reviews we were a little concerned. However we received a warm welcome on arrival, and were shown to a table in the bar for pre lunch drinks. Our table was ready for us when we wanted and the restaurant manager looked after us very well. The food was good quality and very tasty and served efficiently by friendly waiting staff. Our concerns were unfounded and we enjoyed our brief stay at The Chatsworth.

The magazine by the bed describes this hotel as, "Having recently undergone a major refurbishment... now sensitively designed, with Edwardian elegance...the luxury of modern convenience...you are sure to be impressed by the beautiful interiors." It continues with statements such as "unrivalled customer service, " and "Excellent dining is on offer..."

We arrived in the pouring rain but the desk clerk barely stopped reading his newspaper to check us in and didn't notice as we struggled with the luggage and an ancient, cranky lift. What the interiors offer is shockingly tacky, cheap and quite obviously NOT updated since about 1970. To brighten things up were plenty of vases (none too clean) filled with lurid combinations of plastic flowers. Your room comes complete with a non-working trouser press such as I've not seen in decades, a decaying bathroom, dirty worn carpet, stains on the ceiling and a wardrobe that is partially nailed shut to keep it together. Thinking to avoid a rainy night we asked about dinner only to be told that we would have had to book it previously. Thank goodness for that because after breakfast the next morning I was eternally grateful that we hadn't experienced any other meals in that hotel. I mean, how can you make bacon and eggs completely tasteless? The only charming elements were some of the guests who had probably spent their honeymoons there when it was an elegant Edwardian guesthouse.

Room Tip: I would suggest that you locate rooms in another hotel.

Although the rooms were spacious enough, the overall quality and finish was out-dated and of a poor standard. The staff were friendly enough but the food was really awful, all frozen or out of a packet and almost inedible. When I asked about the choice of wine in the bar - I was told red or white - these days people expect more of a choice than that!
The furnishings in the public area are really bad - tired, worn and faded.
The only reasonably pleasant area of the hotel is the front entrance which has seats for people to have a drink. As this seems to attract the young locals, I suspect this is the only area that has been smartened up.
Really shocking

The bedrooms are spaces all tough a little tired. The evening meals are really good with good service. The one point I must make is the lift it is an old and good looking lift BUT the inside door is dangerous as far as I'm concerned let alone the people who stay who reactions are not as fast as they used to be it closes with swiftness and a lot of force has to be used to keep it open. The thing that really makes this hotel worth staying in is the politeness of the staff.

Room Tip: There are some full sea view rooms as well as the half sea view they do cost £5 extra but worth it.
