Our answer is in four parts :
1.The hotel and facilities : It has an easy on the eye, Mediterranean design, not higher than 3 floors, Lovely, well-manicured grounds and beautiful swimming pools and many comfortable sun loungers in different parts of the property and on the beach. There are great hammocks in the grounds to lie on and gaze up to the sky or have a snooze in. Fine breakfasts to start the day : with an array of food varying from many different kinds of fresh fruit to multi-itemed, varied each day, cooked foods and a station for cooking eggs as you like them. A gorgeous dining venue ( 246 ) on decking overlooking the beach. Comfortable, well equipped rooms with large, flat screen TVs. A great kids club – some adults say they have to tear their young ones away from it to do anything else. The hotel is set in front of a lovely bay. Great water sports – if it floats they do it. Much enjoyed the Captained Hobbie Catamaran sails, But there are smaller one sail Hobbie Cats you can handle yourself if you are competent or they will teach you.
2. Nice touches : Well equipped, air-conditioned gym, well equipped, air-conditioned multi station computer room with printers, Free Wi-Fi everywhere, including your balcony; a clothes horse on your balcony to dry bathing costumes etc; cold, fresh fruit flavoured water on tap all day. Fresh fruit, ice lollies and cold, moist towels brought around at different times of the day. Quality beach towels available all day. And loads of fluffy white towels in the bathroom. A regular, comfy, shaded, free water taxi to take you to and from their other resorts on the west coast like Colony Club, where you can spend time there for free. Entertainment at night by the beach front dining can add a magical touch to the evening. As usual, we had a bottle of chilled white wine in the room to greet us on arrival. Also we had two other presents for Christmas: a bottle of locally produced rum and a set of beautiful table mats designed by a local artist depicting turtles swimming in the sea.
3. The Staff : They really do make you feel welcome be they : porters, concierges, waitresses, housekeeping staff, bar staff, beach attenders etc and they are happy to help make your holiday go well. We had a few minor things needing attending to in the room and we had a rapid, friendly staffed positive response on each occasion. Many congrats to Mrs Kim Lewis, General Manager, for her leadership.
4. Very good location: for other dining venues / shops etc : a number of cheap eateries are very close by as is Scarlets for fine dining. And there is a garage opposite where you can by water, snacks etc for your room which has a fridge. Right by the main entrance is a bus stop and there are very frequent buses to take you within 5-10 mins to a nearby town called Holetown with its lots of shops, cafes, restaurants, a large well stocked supermarket, a chemist and two beach front, ( The Beach House and Tides) fine dining venues. The standard fare is 2BB$ or 1 US$ each way. The yellow Reggae buses give change, the blue state owned buses do not. Also, the beach location allows you have great walks by the sea as far north as Sandy Lane Bay and for the energetic or at leisure, beyond via two resort fronts on the way to the board walk and the way on to Holetown.
Any weaknesses : in rare, bad tropical weather the 246 restaurant can be too exposed to rain and so dining is then set in the breakfast, Sugar Cane Room, which while fine for breakfast is uninspiring in the evening. Though there are individual canopies over each table, the management may well erect an overall, permanent canopy instead over the beach front dining area with sides that can be lowered in poor weather, but leaving a lovely view of the beach.
The Christmas/New Year time is one of the most expensive to choose and the dining on Christmas and New Year's Evenings is not cheap – but costs ,especially for bringing in outside entertainment can also be at a peak then as well.
Also, at Christmas, compared to a holiday we took there last June, there were lots more children. So, if you are coming as a couple, as we were, then you may prefer to choose another time, although the grounds are spacious and you are never on top of one another. The only time you may be at close quarters with families would be likely to be at breakfast and lunch.
My wife and I have been there twice within 6 months and are off there again in six months’ time - can't wait !
