“Beautiful Views, but service and maintenance issues ruin it.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2005

We stayed at La Samanna the second half of our honeymoon. The hotel's views, beach and gardens are beautiful. But there are issues that ruined our stay.

1. The restaurant. The food was decent but the menu never changes and the staff is rude, matter of fact, curt and obviously bothered by questions. (especially the woman that is featured in their literature as being on staff for many years)

2. The rooms. Our bathroom was the best part. The room was nothing special as you would expect for $800 a night. Our outside sconces didn't work so we couldn't sit on our balcony at night. The railings around the balcony weren't railings at all. They were concrete walls that ruined sitting outside because you couldn't see the views through the concrete. What a waste of balcony.

3. The spa. When on the resort website, you're given the impression that the spa is world class but in reality, it's quite amature. The massage rooms are open windowed which allows for mosquitos to feast on you while exposed or many times, they massage you outside which is nice but you feel exposed because anyone who walked into the spa can see you. They don't have many staff on hand so, often times, you're too late to book a treatment because all the staff is booked.

All in all, an okay resort but not a 5 star! And not worth the money!

My husband and I went to LaSamana for our honeymoon. We are both experienced travelers and I would say that we have pretty average standards in hotels. After reading some reviews we were a bit nervous about this hotel living up to "honeymoon" standards. We were extremely pleased! You're greeted with a cold moist towel and fruity drink the second you arrive. The service was the best we've ever had. We weren't really looking for this, but being pampered was so wonderful! Everyday on the beach a guy brings you fresh fruit, later a bottled of ice water. We even were served mango ice cream! Every night your bed is turned down. The staff keeps your room immaculate and constantly bringing bottles of water. We did request a "renovated room", so not sure about other rooms. Beach is awesome! Kept very clean and lounge chairs are very comfortable. Water is so beautiful. Not too windy. I would NOT recommend diving through the hotel!!!! They charged $100 per tank (learned the hard way). Later we dove through Dive Safaris, which was a great experience - highly recommend. I would say our favorite thing was the breakfast in the morning. AMAZING view with really good food. Didn't eat at the restaurant beyond breakfast.

We would definitely recommend this hotel to any of our friends/family.

We just spent a week from 6/15 to 6/22 and after hearing and reading that this Hotel is Five stars we were very very disappointed to see an old unairconditioned resort that looks like they havent put a dime in it for 25 years. The resort was clean and friendly and the beach is very nice but its very hard to enjoy a Coke for $5.50 when you can buy a can for $.25 in the supermarket and store them in your Frig. The beach drinks were great but at $12 a pop you have to be an idiot to buy them. The liquor stores sell a quart of Absolute for $5.95, so at $12 they are making a fortune on you. Iam not cheap but its a joke how they try to screw you. The gym is average with not enough AC and the lobby and all the public areas are open with no AC. There is no point to eating there as its way over priced, and the Island is full of many above average restaurants. The Casinos are all very small and under airconditioned so its really not worth your while although I found the one at the Atlantic Beach resort to be fine. Marigot has some very nice shopping but be careful if you go on the Ferry to St. Barts as more than half the people on board got sick from the very very rocky ride which I understand is par for the ride; there plus the stores all close from 12-4 so you get there at 10 and only have two hours to shop as the boat leaves to go back at 345! So after being sick you have no time there to even walk around! Phillipsberg is another waste of time as its all trashy Jewelry stores and Tee shirt companies! The best two Restaurants are Temptation and Le'scargot which I would highly reccomend. But if you go you will still have a good time as long as you rent a car(and dont rent from the the concierge as Hertz will come to you for $10 and deliver a car for $31 a day rather than the $50 they ask at the concierge). The concierge service especially Claudia is helpful, but they of course have their favorites which im sure the Hotel tells them to push. The Italian place in Margot is also very good; Don Camilla or something like that. Avoid La Vie en Rose as its another bad over priced menu that has seen better days. I hope this is helpful; just remember its very hot there and look for AC in restaurants or you will be miserable.

Stayed at La Samana (LS) for honeymoon end of May/beginning of June. We are from DC and expected a MUCH more upscale property. Not sure why it is classified as one of the world's leading hotels. We expected something similar to the Ritz or Four Seasons....the Ritz it is NOT. It's not even on the scale of a Fairmont resort. LS is very old. Rooms -- We stayed both in the main building and in a beachfront suite. Unless you can afford the beachfront suite, do not stay at LS for your honeymoon. The regular room in the main building was very small and very average (Holiday Inn average). The bedding (comforter) was also holiday inn-like...i.e. would not sit on it (even in beachfront suite). Expense -- Yes, LS is expensive, but if you're receiving 5 star accommodations, you would not mind the expense. But again, the accomodations were only par. Beach -- the BEST thing about LS. It is beautiful and pristine with white beaches. Recap -- would NOT go to LS for honeymoon. Actually, we will not return to LS. There are MANY nicer Carribean resorts, than LS.

We stayed in La Samanna immediately after a lovely 4-day stay at the Guanahani in St. Bart's, admittedly a tough act to follow. But La Samanna's unbelievable beach, various amenities, restaurants and overall ambience made it tough to say which was ultimately our favorite (ended as a tie).

Breakfast on the terrace overlooking the beach was both delicious and a delightful way to kick off the day. The gorgeous white sand beach with beach bar (and beachtable service!), as well as the infinity edge pool, were fantastic places to relax and sun yourself. St. Martin itself is an impressive, and FUN, destination, especially when compared to the more relaxed pace of St. Bart's. Thus, renting a car for exploring Orient Beach, Grand Case, etc is a must, given La Samanna's far western location. The only improvement we would suggest relates to the rooms, where the main house standard rooms were a bit small (and though recently refurbished, had quite a strong clinical smell), but at less than EUR 300 a night, they were still one of the best deals we could find among the world's "best hotels". Would definitely return, although perhaps after springing for a villa directly on the beach.
