“Hit or Miss, but pretty good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2009

My husband and I chose to take a last minute trip to Stavanger during Easter and stayed at the Thon Hotel Maritim. We reserved a room with one double bed, but they gave us one w/ two singles. It was corrected by giving us a free upgrade to a suite. The regular rooms were quite small, but the suite was almost twice the size, so we were pleased. The hotel is clean, but the quality shifts from area to area. The reception area/lounge/breakfast area is modern and new, but upstairs some hallway carpets are worn to the point the colour has disappeared, hooks on the walls, but no pictures, etc.
Positives: the staff member who checked us in was friendly and helpful (Åshild). The complimentary breakfast buffet was good and a very large variety of hot and cold food. The location is in a easy walk of restaurants, shopping, bus/train stations. The view is nice if you receive a room on the park side fourth floor and above. The front side of the hotel is a walking street.
Negatives: No parking near the hotel or free internet in the room. Very few free tv channels, but extra channels & movies can be purchased. Our room was on back side of the hotel so there was bus noise and some shouting after bars were closed. The view was of a concrete building, so I would recommend the front side of the hotel. While the water pressure was great, the glass shower partition wasn't large enough to keep the floor from being soaked. A bath mat wasn't provided, so we had to use one of the hand towels every day to mop the floor.

Stayed at the Thon as a 1 night part of DFDS package by sea from Newcastle to Stavanger and loved the arrangements made for us, from the coach transfer, and clean room available from the moment we arrived. Great views of the lake and city from our 5th floor room (520). Tea and coffee were free. So comfy beds, and clean shower room. Value cannot be faulted, and the breakfast was worthy of any 4* hotel anywhere.
Friendly staff and helpful attitude makes all the difference. They are very child friendly too, with special play area and even a stairs so children can keep an eye on parents at reception!
Well worth a second visit. So we will be back.

  • Liked — Friendly welcome and a small hotel that caters well for tourists and families
  • Disliked — Some rooms can be noisy if you are a light sleeper ask for a quiet room

Easily, this could be the #1 hotel in Stavanger. We didn't stay in any other hotels, but the Maritim was very very nice.

The value was excellent. It was middle of the road price-wise for Stavanger, but in a perfect location (I think none were better) - across from the pretty lake, a block or two from the harbor and touristy area / restaurants, easily walkable to Gamle Stavanger.

The rooms were nice, a good size, clean. The breakfast was excellent (I've found the non-budget Thon hotels all had great breakfasts), there's free internet, free expresso machine (very good per my friend). The staff was excellent.

Contrary to a previous post, we did not have any problems parking. There were open spots in the streets which were often free. The trick may be to park in the back end of the hotel and enter through the third floor entrance (you have to ring a bell).

n.b. I recommend the fried fish / fish cakes at the fish market. They were delicious!

Really good hotel right in the heart of Stavanger, the rooms were clean and cosy and always really warm.

Staff were friendly and the breakfast was good.

I would definitely stay again.

Thon Hotel Maritim has an excellent location right in the middle of Stavanger city center. The rooms were cleen, but not very big. The breakfast was good. My only problem with this hotel was that the wireless internet was not free.

My partner and I stayed here for 4 nights in August 2007.

Overall it was a pleasant stay. Spacious bedroom and bathroom (the bathroom is very wheelchair-friendly). Reception staff were polite and helpful. Breakfast was good.

Location is excellent - opposite a pleasant lake, yet only a couple minutes' walk from the city centre and harbour.

The only "negative" is that there is no hotel parking, contrary to what it says on the Expedia website. The closest place to park your car is at the parking lot above the bus station nearby. (There is no nearby on-street parking.) The bus station is only about 300m from the hotel. It is a very easy walk, but make sure you get good driving instructions from the hotel reception staff. We didn't, and spent a frustrating 40 minutes circling around the city trying to locate the entrance to the parking lot. Also note that overnight parking there will cost you 70 kroner. On the self-service payment machines, you can pay by credit card or cash, but try to avoid using Mastercard if possible. On one of the occasions that we tried to pay using our Mastercard, the machine wouldn't recognise the card, and eventually blocked our parking ticket, requiring us to contact the parking lot Security Office to sort it out. The man from the Security Office said that the machines are known to have problems recognising Mastercards.
