“the most original hotel room and then some (p.s. we loved it)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2011

After a busy day of hiking and sightseeing, we started to look for a hotel around a certain location on our route (we checked the evening before and knew that there were quite a few vacancies). But when we arrived in the area, the hotels did not seem so nice and all had views of parking lots. The Leikanger hotel was off our way, but I noticed the name in a list of hotels, and because it was getting late, we simply booked a room. The man on the other end of the phone line was so friendly and courteous, that I had a feeling that we wouldn't be disappointed.
When we drove up to the hotel, we were so happy. It sits right at the waterside with an incredible view from all sides, a lovely garden and quite a few sitting areas inside. The courteous man on the phone greeted us at the desk and we immediately felt at home. In the meantime, I had read what other people wrote about the decor of the hotel. To me, cleanliness, comfort and courteousness of the staff comes first, so I was less concerned with the furniture.

But when we opened the door to our room, that was the first thing we noticed. We had walked into a viking suite. Our bed was shaped like a viking ship with a red and white striped sail on the wall. The ceiling was blue with painted stars and all the furniture bore a nautical theme. Our son immediately wanted to transfer his parents to another room so that he could have that bed.
But the living room area with his bed was just as quaint with colorful paintings on the wall and a beautiful big porch off the room, so he was satisfied as well.
The room was clean and beds were comfortable. We spent most of the evening sitting on the porch and watching the sun set while my son played mini golf and then took pictures so that he could post pictures of this cool place on facebook.
In the lobby we read the history of this family run hotel and drank coffee. So happy we went a bit off our way to this hotel.
We had a car but noticed that there is a ferry that goes between Leikanger and Flam everyday.

This hotel is a bit of a faded glory. As others have commented, the décor is garish, but the rooms are nice with a lovely view. We also had a big balcony outside our room.

We stayed here a few nights, and I hardly slept, due to the window blinds being unable to filter any light, and the summer nights in Norway are quite bright. Bring a blindfold!

If you are part of a bus tour, which most of the visitors seemed to be, the location will be just fine, otherwise, bring a car, or be prepared to walk several kilometres for anything interesting.

We had a 1 night stay at this wonderful hotel. Our room was so charming and such a lovely change from the big chains. The staff were extremely pleasant and our meal was great. The setting was a delight and we sat out until late at night just relaxing and looking at the lovely views. It was our favourite hotel on our tour of Norway, we couldn't fault it.

Over and over again we find that the best hospitality, accommodation and travel experiences are found off the main tourist routes and our experience at the Leikanger Hotel exemplifies that.
The hotel is well run by the owners. The kitsch furnishings give it a disarming welcome and distinguishes it from the more sterile perfunctory furnishings of bigger chain hotels.
Our room on the first floor was clean and had a balcony with glorious view across the fjord. I bought a beer from the bar and sipped it whilst surveying the view. The ensuite was also clean and functional and I still chuckle at the gaudy green marble print all over the walls! I couldn't help feeling that by having a shower I might be contributing to long term damp problems!
It looks like the hotel has an accommodation wing for coach groups whilst individually booked guests get rooms in the main building. This separation is a good thing and individual guests also benefit by dining in smaller quieter rooms away from the gaggle.
The buffet dinner and breakfast was good and the waiters were prompt at looking after drinks and clearing tables.
There is a nice walk (or drive) up the hill to some birch forests at Fraekaland. A passenger ferry stops at 9am to take people to the Flam railway and it brings you back by 4.30.
