We stayed two nights at Union Øye, which was a very pleasant experience.
The hotel works hard to maintain the style and atmosphere from its heyday 100 years ago or more. The buildings and rooms are old-style, and of course with no TV or internet connections in the rooms (nor, officially, elsewhere in the hotel).
The food was good and very international (which it probably was 100 years ago as well). They served a fixed 2 course meal for lunch and a 3 or 4 course meal for dinner.
Breakfast buffet was quite good, and typical Norwegian.
Service at the hotel was very good and enthusiastic.
Øye is a very small village, and very quiet. The fact that during most of the day very few cars pass by along the narrow road, adds to the 19- century atmosphere. The village probably is even quieter today than 100 years ago. There are no other services than the hotel itself; no shops, no restaurants.
The natural beauty of Øye, Norangdal valley and Hjørundfjord is enormous, it is possibly is the most spectacular of all the Norwegian fjord regions.
Given the remoteness of the hotel, it is essential to have your own transport.
