“Old style hotel, very relaxing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2009

We stayed two nights at Union Øye, which was a very pleasant experience.
The hotel works hard to maintain the style and atmosphere from its heyday 100 years ago or more. The buildings and rooms are old-style, and of course with no TV or internet connections in the rooms (nor, officially, elsewhere in the hotel).
The food was good and very international (which it probably was 100 years ago as well). They served a fixed 2 course meal for lunch and a 3 or 4 course meal for dinner.
Breakfast buffet was quite good, and typical Norwegian.
Service at the hotel was very good and enthusiastic.
Øye is a very small village, and very quiet. The fact that during most of the day very few cars pass by along the narrow road, adds to the 19- century atmosphere. The village probably is even quieter today than 100 years ago. There are no other services than the hotel itself; no shops, no restaurants.
The natural beauty of Øye, Norangdal valley and Hjørundfjord is enormous, it is possibly is the most spectacular of all the Norwegian fjord regions.

Given the remoteness of the hotel, it is essential to have your own transport.

“An extraordinary hotel !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2007

Had for a long time planned to stay at the hotel, and it fullfilled all the expectations!!
Walking through the hallways was like visiting a museum where you could peep into all the free rooms behind a rope. Every room has it`s own caracter and name, all the interior was charming, old fashioned - except for the bathrooms - and full of antiques.
We got the Blue room (# 7) where the gost could appear. Upon arrival we got a silver plate with some garlic; if we put the plate outside our room , the gost would come visiting us. Keepeing the garlig in the room - no gost would appear !
We put the garlic outside, but the gost Linda did not come for visit.
A wonderful fourposted bed, beautiful bathroom, very clean and a nice view towards the little village of Oye, a waterfall , mountains and the fjord.
The dinner was a set meny of 5 courses - delicious !! Completed by selcted wines from the head waiter.
Breakfast buffet was vey good.
After dinner the guests were gathered in the lovely piano room where we were told the sad story about the local girl Linda who fall in love with foreign officer who was married . She drowned in the river of Oye ! A local waitress song beautilful classical songs.
I absolutely recommend a stay at the hotel, and a good idea is to stay here and visit Geiranger as a day trip from Oye.

“Incredible-worth the drive”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2007

What a place!

It feels like stepping 100 years back in time from the rooms to the service (all staff are dressed like in the old days).

All the rooms are named after famous persons (and the saying goes that they all have at some point visited the hotel). We were given the Karen Blixen room. We had a beautiful fourposter bed and we had a great view to the breathtaking mountains surrounding the hotel.

Be prepared to spend your time at the hotel- because there is really nothing around. However, we did not find this a problem at all since they served excellent food and wine.

After dinner they gathered all of the guests in the piano room and they told stories about the hotel and its guests throughout the years. The story about Linda- the ghost that is rumoured to visit the blue room- was sad and made me look twice over my shoulder before going to bed.

Excellent staff and service- well worth the money and drive

“Fantastic hotel in stunning scenery”

This hotel is one of the jewels of Norwegian Historical Hotels. This is also the name of the hotel chain that the hotel is a member of. See this site: (-)dehistoriske(-)We were 8 couples spending a weekend at this wonderful hotel. Our goal was to enjoy the hotel, the food and to do the trek to the top of "Slogen", the peak just behind the hotel. This is a spectacular trek, but you shold be of average fitness in order to do this in one day. It is about 6-8 hours return from the hotel, but absolutely worth it! We had snow the last 300 metres to the top, and this resulted in a couple of hours extra. You can see the montain here: (--)and the hotel you can see right at the bottom!
On arrival, all the rooms were open for guests to have a look inside. And we just loved the walk of all three floors. It is like walking in a museum!
All rooms are different, and named after different famous guests who have stayed at the hotel. Among these are Karen Blixen, King Oscar II, and not the least, Kaiser Wilhelm II, who stayed at the hotel several times. The story tells that he was there when he was told that the 1st World War had started! A room is of course named after him, and in the bathroom you will find the bathtub which was originally found on the ship he used travelling to Norway. In each room you will find lovely antiques, and in the evening, the hotel staff usually tell the story of the hotel and its famous guests - and of course the GHOST of the hotel, which is told to be seen in one of the rooms at times.
The restaurant serves excellent food and wines, and all in all - this is a hotel to experience and enjoy from arrival to departure.

We had a great time at the Hotel Union. The rooms were decorated beautifully and were clean. It was a little expensive for being so out of the way. They have an interesting history and rumor has it a ghost too! Next time we have to do the hike to SLOGAN!
