I stayed at this hotel because it was the one Globus chose for the Scandanavian tour. This was the worst hotel of the various hotels we stayed at. The furniture in my room was banged up and it had definitely seen better days. The bathroom stunk and it caused the room to smell some. The breakfast buffet was lacklustre. Some of the food items were cold when they should've been warm or hot. One of the people at reception were rude when I asked what kind of internet access they had..

Good points about this hotel: excellent location. It was a block from the harbor and just down the street from the Hanseatic era buildings. It has a free internet terminal.

“Try to avoid it”

Our triple room, #502, was actually quite nice - situated at the front of the hotel looking over the rooftops of Bryggen and out over the harbour. Bathroom is however small.

Our fellow travellers had a double room overlooking the inner courtyard, this room felt claustrophobic.

The problems started when we arrived at the hotel. We'd booked 3 nights through the hotel's own website but when we arrived were informed they had made a mistake and overbooked the hotel for the 1st night so we had to stay in the First Hotel Marin accross the road for 1 night. This hotel was actually much better but we disliked the inconvenience of moving (tried to stay in the First hotel all 3 nights but they were full the remaining 2 nights!).

The breakfast at the Rosenkrantz was awful, hopelessly inadequate-sized room, v. difficult to get a table then had to share with others. The hotel was full with bus loads of group tourists. Food nothing to shout about.

The checkout was a mess, they wanted to charge us for 3 nights even though we had paid the First Hotel Marin for the 1st night, then wanted to charge a higher rate for the triple room even though it was a special offer when booking - same rate as a double. Credit card was charged and credited 3 times with the resulting exchange rate losses, and even though we got a discount in the end and the staff apologised, the 30 minute checkout was a frustrating end to a disappointing stay at the Rosenkrantz.

“Great breakfast buffet”

We booked two rooms for 4 adults and stayed here June 20-21, 2007. Great pair of rooms, one was a corner with cross-breeze from its windows. More than ample room, nice beds and decor.

Breakfast buffet was one of the best we encountered during our week in Norway in various cities. Lots of variety, local dishes (fish, cheeses, etc.) & American (scrambled eggs & waffles).

Location was perfect for seeing all the Bergen sights - only one block from the waterfront, where most everything in Bergen is located. We liked their free lobby internet computer for checking e-mails, and we liked the friendly front desk staff. We bothered the staff a lot because we stored our luggage in their downstairs storage room, and made several trips there during the 2nd day, to get out rain gear, store items, etc., but the front desk people were very polite during all of that.

“Clean. Easy to get to. A good all rounder”

Thon Hotel Rosenkrantz

May 8, 2007

Excellent from start to finish. On the phone taking the booking in faultless English they were great and helpful. Upon arrival all staff again were smiley and informative. Ok, so let's go to the main things like the room and meals. The room I felt was quite large, with room for a twin bed with a couch that could have turned into a bed.

The room was very clean as was the bathroom. No bath in the bathroom but that almost goes without saying these days. Anyway the shower was powerful and hot and there was even underfloor heating which I felt was a nice touch.

Our room #408 overlooked the old wooden houses of Bryggen quayside and there was a clear view of the harbour too. If you are a light sleeper they do like to party in Bergen and the sound of the returning revelers can be quite loud and late 2am+. Just so happens I like to sleep with the window open but there is good double glazing so it may not be an issue for everyone.

The breakfast was the usual continental buffet but to a reliable and high standard. I can't really fault this hotel. It's a good solid bet in a great position. It's nice to be right in the centre of the town and it's also just around the corner from and the last stop of the Airport bus which makes reaching it and leaving it a real "no brainer." Don't bother with a cab. It really is so easy to take the bus and obviously a lot cheaper too. Pay the driver on the bus.

Expect to pay around $200 per room maybe a bit less if your lucky and depending on season etc.,

The best thing about this hotel is its location, right in the centre of Bergen & a few minutes from the airport bus stop. We stayed in July when the weather was quite hot so the limited opening of the windows was somewhat restrictive. The beds were very comfortable and the staff friendly. The breakfasts were OK, but nothing to rave about. In general I would describe the hotel as ordinary. Do not expect always to be able to get a drink in the hotel bar. For some reason, unknown even to the hotel staff, it is closed during the month of July!!
