“A let down for Radisson and the Carlson Group”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2012

This was my first visit to Bergen and I was very much looking forward to staying in the central Radisson Hotel. I use Radisson hotels often and I'm a Carson concierge elite member. One of the main benefits of this membership status is to get an automatic upgraded to a Business class room and this was the case when I checked into the Radisson Blu Hotel Norge, Bergen. I was allocated a room on the 9th floor and it was by Radisson standard very poor, worn out and in a bad state of repair. The carpet was sticky under foot and I didn't feel at all comfortable. I decided to stay one night before moving on to another Hotel in the center of Bergen, Not recommended!

This hotel is nice. A bit noisy as there is a water feature in front of the hotel running all the time. The meals were OK but why do they serve up PORK every evening? Breakfast was better. I never ate the pork. Ugh. The hotel is in the center of Bergen and can walk to quite a few of the attractions. I would stay here again.

We stayed here for 2 nights, the location is excellent, everything is a short walk away, there are however better hotels near enough to avoid this place. Having read the reviews we asked for a quiet room, the guy at reception provided us an upgrade to the business class rooms, which were bigger and he gave us one on the inside. He did try his best, and i do have some sympathy for the frontline staff, it cannot be nice to work somewhere which constantly receives negative reviews.

The hotel is a little run down, but it does seem that they are catering for mass coach tourism, the breakfast was okay, but again definitely not the best quality produce used, the breads are not as good as other hotels. The toasted needs to be binned, as its broken, dirty and not fit for purpose. The hotel needs to employ more staff, as they seemed overwhelmed with the crowd which seems to come on these coach trips and pretty much the whole breakfast turns into a a chaos. I have stayed in other Radisson hotels and this one does not live up to the brand. Perhaps management are not concerned and are catering purely for mass market coach trips only.

Despite being given a inside room, there were some people who got drunk and unfortunately were staying in the hotel, they were quite noisy and this did wake us up. Again i do not blame the staff for this. I would not choose to stay in this hotel if I can help it, look for other hotels around, which are within the vicinity.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet rooms on the inside, avoid any rooms facing the outside. Inside rooms are darker but...

As I write this review, it is 1 in the morning and there is a live band playing music ... there is no hope it ending and the front desk is not answering calls. We won't be sleeping much tonight.
The room is small and dated, but the real problem is the noise.

Room Tip: I don't know if it is possible to get a room that is quiet, given the location

Overall we were disappointed in this hotel and would not stay here again. The location is great, but means it is very noisy and disrupted our sleep even with the windows closed. The rooms are incredibly small and hard to manuever with two people in it. We arrived about 1 hour before check in time and there were no rooms available -- that's not a surprise. The staff said they would put a rush on getting the rooms available. We checked our luggage and went out sight seeing. When we came back at the regular check in time, the rooms were still not available and the staff could give us no sense of when they would be ready. We only stayed here one night and that was long enough.

A weekend in Bergen can be great. A great hotel will top the stay. And as they say in realeatate circuits: Location, location and location. Hotel Norge got the location nailed. In the centre of Bergen, close to the "Blue Stone" and the square, "Torgalmenningen".

But as for standards. The hotel is left in some late 80's or early 90's bubble. The colors are dark and the carpets are run down. The tiles in the bathroom is soo 80's and the finishing bears the hallmarks of repairs and age. It works ok, it just aint modern.

As for food. The breakfeast was great. Gigantic norwegian meal. Hot and cold dishes. That was something to write home about. But as for the rest, if you remove the location bit, this was at the best mediocre.

There have to be a more modern hotel in the centre of Bergen. If you like run down hotels, with charme, this is your spot. If you want something else... Did I mention that the preice was a on the high end of the scale. Not worth the time or the money.

Q:
Check in or walk on by?
A:
Walk on by.

We had booked standard doublerooms - but we were given meetingrooms (!) with rollaway beds. When we wanted to complain, we were referred to an email adress (the reception manager) - 3 days after we left the hotel we still haven't received an answer.

Not only was the rooms/beds far from the expected standard - but they were located close to a very busy street with noicy nightlife until 3 am every night.

The only positive things I can say about the stay is that the hotel is in a perfect location for discovering Bergen and that the celebration of my mothers 80 years birthday (in one of their special rooms for parties like this) was a success - good food and good service.

Room Tip: Higher floors to avoid noice from nightlife (west side of the hotel).
