“Comfortable”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2012

We have just departed the property and have joined the hertegruten cruise.
The property is ok, the bathrooms need an update, no complaints really but I am sure there are nicer places to stay.

Room Tip: Everything is close by but there are better parts to stay. A veryprettytown.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2012

I tend to prefer to stay at Nordic Choice properties, because some of my favorite hotels in the cities I visit most often on business (Aalesund and Trondheim) are Nordic Choice.

Visiting Bergen on business last week, this was the only hotel having anything near an acceptable price: Bergen in May is crowded and expensive. Still: nearly NOK 1500/ night is not cheap. So my overall rating reflects the price. Had this been a bonus stay, of a weekend stay at half the price, I would have considered a "four".

The location is on the western fringe of downtown, a ten minute walk from the main square, and three minutes from the venue where my meeting is. There are some restaurants nearby, and a pedestrianized shopping street starts at the hotel. There is a airport bus service every half hour (on '00 and '30 in both directions) (not the main Flybussen, that stops ten minutes walk away), but a smaller private setup, which starts and leaves just outside the hotel.

The hotel is not as quiet as I had expected from the rather secluded location. There is no through vehicle traffic outside, but a lot of pedestrianized through traffic, i.e. school leavers ("Russ") walking to and from parties. The room is standard Nordic Choice: reasonably good bed, high desk with a bar stool, and one deep chair. Sink is in room (behind frosted glass partition), WC and shower in a separate small room.

The breakfast was disappointing. Fried eggs is good, but no bacon at all the two days I had breakfast, only cocktail sausages and meat balls. Average selection of bread, only a small selection of cold cuts and no "special" items, such as waffles or danishes. A disappointing selection of newspapers at breakfast, just Dagens Næringsliv, no local papers or ordninary national papers. These hade to be picked up/ bought at the reception.

Free wifi in room which worked perfectly (as at all Nordic Choice hotels). This is a Comfort Hotel, not a Clarion Collection, thus no free supper.

Cleaning was good as expected.

Thus: nothing wrong with the stay, just unmemorable. I would not mind coming back, but at a better rate.

Hello Treemonisha! Thank you for your thorough review of our hotel. In May, high season has already started in Bergen and the citys hotels fills up with tourists. Like airlines, most hotels operate with dynamic prices. Therefore our prices are higher during high season. This actually makes 1500 kroner quite reasonable compared to many of the city’s other hotels. In general we receive a lot of good customer feedback for being a very quiet hotel. However, in the weeks leading up to 17th of May (when Norwegians celebrates our constitution) we have quite a lot of “russ” (high school graduates) in the city. And, as any local can tell you, they tend to be a bit noisy. We are sorry to hear that you found our breakfast to be unsatisfying. Unfortunately, we do not serve bacon at our breakfastbuffe. Newspapers can be found, like you wrote, in the reception next to the restaurant where the breakfast is served. We have the pleasure of offering our guests “Dagens Næringsliv” in addition to the country’s three leading newspapers “Aftenposten”, “Dagbladet” and “VG”. We also carry the local newspaper “BT”. And remember: If you are a choice member, the newspaper is complimentary. We hope to see you again soon!

We stayed here with a group of 5 people. We got rooms on the same floor and we were all satisfied with our rooms. Location is good, but could have been more central, a bit far from the bus/train station. Free coffee and tea all day for guests at the hotel. Breakfast was avrage. All in all we are satisfied with our stay in this hotel.

The hotel is a small hotel near the Bryggen World Heritage Sites (+/- 15 minutes walk)
The breakfast was good but nothing superb (good for what you paid). The lobby is small with 2 or 3 sofas. The room was small. Same for the bathroom, but both were clean. And that's it!
At least it has free WiFi! ;-)

Hello KiLiLiam. Thank you for reviewing our hotel. We pride ourselves in being a very central hotel, with fast and easy access to the city’s sights. We are sorry to hear that you think our rooms are small, the size is actually very standard for Norwegian budget hotels. We hope to see you again!

I was reluctant at first about writing a review for Holberg Comfort Hotel. I`ve stayed there over half a dozen times in the past 2 years or so (just came out of there this morning after a 1 night stay). I read some reviews for tourists above me here with different experiences. To those cheesed off, I couldn`t disagree with you more. I`ve never had any one disappointing episode with the hotel nor the staff; always pleasant, and ready to help as much as they possibly could. Of course the concept (service) in Norway might differ from some other countries, and some tourists may have high expectations in a country rated as one of the most expensive on the planet. Don`t expect someone to open the door for you, or show you to your room, nor carry your luggage. This is a simple hotel, yet its centrally located, you can do your errands, see some attractions, reach the city center all on foot, and that`s the beauty of it. Rooms may differ in size according to category, but they all have something in common: clean rooms, clean bathrooms, and hearty breakfast. If you get a chance try the Chilli Bar, they make very delicious tappas. The receptionist is always cheerful and doesn`t miss a beat about helping to find the best and cheapest reservation. Thanks a lot Henriett, I`ll be back very soon.

Room Tip: look for low rate calender, big saving can be made sometimes

Nice, clean and simple hotel in central Bergen. Location saves this hotel, as it is too simple for the experienced traveller, but that's reflected in the price. Clean premises and friendly staff. Good wifi coverage. Small rooms with no minibar and a tall desk with a bar stool. Comfortable beds and pay tv, but few international channels.

Hello MisterMellow. Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. We apologize for our late reply, due to some technical difficulties with Tripadvisor. Not having a minibar in every room is part of our strategy to save the environment and further cut expense for you - the customer. We do however have a lobbyshop in the reception with food, drinks and other necessaries to suit your every need. We hope to see you again real soon!

Berren is an expensive city...Norway in general is expensive....so when I booked my room well in advance through the webpage at approximately $70 Australian a night I thought I had a bargin...and for Norway i certainly did. While my room was a reasonable size (by european standards) and clean it was certainly nothing fancy. In fact the whole hotel was quite dated and a little tatty.
Breakfast was not included in the price but was reasonably priced and there were plenty of choices, wifi was available, the staff were generally helpful and pleasant and the hotel is located about a 10 minute walk from the fish market or central mall area. All in all a reasonable choice in an expensive city...nothing fancy but clean and convenient, probably what would equate to a budget hotel in Australia.

Hello wanderingirl23. Thank you for reviewing our hotel! First of all we apologize for our late reply, due to some technical difficulties with Tripadvisor. Because of our strong currency and high taxes, Norway can be a pretty expensive country to visit. However, like you pointed out in your review, we pride ourselves on beeing among the cheapest hotels in Bergen. We are sorry to hear that you found our hotel dated, since your visit we have however upgraded our reception, bar, and our lobby with new furniture. We hope to see you again soon!
